Choose your starter in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen: Bulbasaur (Grass/Poison), Squirtle (Water), or Charmander (Fire). Includes first rival battle details.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
After choosing your starter Pokemon (Bulbasaur, Squirtle, or Charmander) from Professor Oak's lab, your rival will challenge you to your first battle.
  2. 2
Your rival's Pokemon will be Level 5 and match the starter you chose.
  3. 3
Professor Oak will guide you through the battle controls. Use the Potion you received earlier if needed. Losing this practice battle does not result in a Game Over or loss of money, but winning earns you some starting cash.
  4. 4
After the battle, your rival departs. Exit the lab and Pallet Town.
  5. 5
You can fish in Pallet Town using the Good Rod (Krabby, Horsea, Magikarp) or Super Rod (Krabby, Kingler, Gyarados, Staryu, Shellder, Slowpoke, Psyduck).
  6. 6
On Route 1, you will encounter wild Pidgey and Rattata. You cannot catch Pokemon yet, so focus on battling for experience. Run if your Pokemon's health is low.
  7. 7
A man on Route 1 will give you a free Potion.
  8. 8
Arrive in Viridian City. Heal at the Pokemon Center and visit the Pokemon Mart.
  9. 9
Pick up a package for Professor Oak at the Pokemon Mart.
  10. 10
Return to Pallet Town and give the package to Professor Oak.
  11. 11
Professor Oak will give you the Pokedex and 5 Pokeballs.
  12. 12
Travel back to Viridian City. Now you can catch Pokemon. It is highly recommended to train your newly caught Pidgey or Rattata immediately, as they may be part of your team for the entire game.
Tips
  • Bulbasaur is a Grass/Poison type, good for beginners, strong against the first few gyms, and can learn Frenzy Plant. It handles Special hits well and can be an effective annoyer in competitive battles.
  • Squirtle is a Water type, capable of taking many hits, with decent offensive stats but slow speed. It can learn Hydro Cannon and is a safe choice for a utility Pokemon.
  • Charmander is a Fire type with low defenses but high offenses and speed, making it excellent for sweeping. It can learn powerful moves via breeding and evolves into a Fire/Flying type. It is considered one of the best Fire types in the game but can be more challenging to progress with initially.
  • Your rival will always choose a starter Pokemon that is strong against yours.
  • You can jump over ledges on your return trip to Viridian City, but gaining more experience is recommended.
  • The first battle with your rival is a practice battle; don't worry too much about losing, but winning provides money.
  • You can catch Krabby, Horsea, and Magikarp with the Good Rod in Pallet Town.
  • The Super Rod in Pallet Town offers a wider variety of Pokemon, including Kingler, Gyarados, Staryu, Shellder, Slowpoke, and Psyduck.
  • On Route 1, Pidgey and Rattata appear with equal frequency (50% each) and are easy to catch.
  • You receive a free Potion from a man on Route 1.
  • After receiving the Pokedex, you can finally catch Pokemon.
