When you first create your character, there's an option in the customization screen that allows you to set the mode for this character. It's easily overlooked, but important to understand. Near the bottom of the screen at the left is an option called "Game Mode." Labeling this option as "Game Mode" is a little confusing. This character customization option applies to this character and this character only just like the rest of the characteristics you select on the customization screen. Once start playing with this character, you can select "Game Mode" at the World Stone in Ward 13. That's something completely different (Campaign Mode, Adventure Mode, etc.). This setting applies to this individual character and, once the character is created, it cannot be changed.

There are two options available here: Normal and Hardcore.

Hardcore Mode is a way to make the game more challenging by putting everything on the line with every fight. Once a Hardcore Mode character dies, that's it--there's no coming back. That character is dead forever and you have to start over at the very beginning with a new character. Playing with a Hardcore Character offers some extra rewards for completing certain tasks. Winning world boss fights and completing campaigns with a Hardcore Character gets you nice things like rings, amulets, and an emote that are not available for Normal Characters.

Normal mode is, well, normal. None of the things you see in the warning dialogue above applies in Normal mode. For obvious rage prevention reasons, it's best to learn the game with a Normal Character.
