While Rustler isn't a traditional RPG with deep crafting trees, understanding how to leverage the limited crafting and upgrading systems is crucial for survival and success in the chaotic medieval world. This section will guide you through acquiring essential items and improving your gear to give you an edge against the law and rival thugs.

Acquiring & Modifying Weapons

Your primary means of defense and offense will be your trusty weapons. While you can find basic weapons lying around or dropped by defeated enemies, the real power comes from modifying them.

• Basic Weapon Acquisition:
  • Scavenging: Keep an eye out for rusty swords, wooden clubs, and even pitchforks scattered throughout the countryside and within villages. These are often found near peasant homes, farmsteads, or after skirmishes.
  • Looting: Defeated enemies, especially guards and rival gang members, frequently drop their weapons. Always check their bodies!
  • Buying: The Blacksmith in the main town (often marked with an anvil icon on your map) sells a selection of basic and slightly improved weapons.
• Weapon Upgrades (The Blacksmith):

  The Blacksmith is your go-to for improving your existing arsenal. He can enhance a weapon's damage output and sometimes its durability. Upgrades require both coin and specific materials.

  1. Locate the Blacksmith: Head to the main town. The Blacksmith's shop is usually a prominent building with a forge outside.
  2. Initiate Dialogue: Approach the Blacksmith and interact with him.
  3. Select "Upgrade Weapon": A menu will appear, showing your current weapons and available upgrades.
  4. Choose Your Weapon: Select the weapon you wish to upgrade. For example, upgrading a Rusty Sword to a Sharpened Sword.
  5. Gather Materials:
     • Coins: Earned from missions, looting, or selling stolen goods.
     • Scrap Metal: Found by destroying environmental objects like wooden carts, barrels, or sometimes dropped by armored enemies. Look for glinting piles of junk.
     • Whetstones: Less common, these are usually found in chests, as quest rewards, or occasionally sold by wandering merchants.
  6. Confirm Upgrade: If you have the necessary funds and materials, confirm the upgrade. Your weapon's stats will immediately improve.

Horse Upgrades & Customization

Your noble steed is more than just transportation; it's an extension of your criminal enterprise. Upgrading your horse can significantly impact your speed, carrying capacity, and even combat effectiveness.

• Horse Acquisition:
  • Stealing: The most common method. Simply approach any horse and mount it. Be aware that stealing horses in plain sight will alert guards.
  • Purchasing: The Horse Trader, typically found on the outskirts of larger settlements, sells various horses with different base stats. Look for the horseshoe icon on your map.
• Horse Upgrades (The Horse Trader):

  The Horse Trader offers several crucial upgrades for your equine companion. These often require a significant coin investment.

  1. Locate the Horse Trader: Find the Horse Trader's stable, usually outside the main town walls.
  2. Initiate Dialogue: Speak with the Horse Trader.
  3. Select "Upgrade Horse": This will bring up a menu of available upgrades.
  4. Available Upgrades:
     • Improved Saddlebags: Increases your inventory capacity, allowing you to carry more loot and quest items. Essential for longer expeditions.
     • Reinforced Hooves: Boosts your horse's overall speed and stamina, making escapes and long-distance travel much more efficient.
     • Protective Barding: While not a direct combat upgrade for you, barding can increase your horse's resilience to damage, preventing it from being easily spooked or incapacitated during chases.
  5. Confirm Upgrade: Pay the required coin to apply the upgrade.

Consumable Crafting (The Alchemist)

While not extensive, a rudimentary form of crafting exists for essential consumables like healing potions and throwable items. The Alchemist is your contact for these.

• Locate the Alchemist: The Alchemist's hut is usually tucked away in a more secluded area, often in a forest or swamp, marked by a bubbling cauldron icon.
• Initiate Dialogue: Speak with the Alchemist.
• Select "Brew Potions" or "Craft Throwables":
  • Healing Potions: Requires Herbs (found in grassy areas, forests) and Empty Bottles (looted from houses, taverns, or dropped by enemies). These restore a portion of your health.
  • Smoke Bombs: Requires Sulphur (found near volcanic vents or specific mining spots) and Cloth Scraps (looted from peasants, houses). Useful for quick escapes from sticky situations.
  • Molotov Cocktails: Requires Oil (found in barrels, sometimes dropped by guards) and Cloth Scraps. Excellent for area denial and dealing with groups of enemies.
• Gather Ingredients: Actively search for the required ingredients in the specified locations.
• Confirm Craft: With ingredients and a small fee, the Alchemist will craft your desired consumable.
