When you begin a new game in Star Ocean: The Divine Force, you are prompted to select a main character. The events of the story will be revealed from the perspective of the character you choose. Raymond sees things through a high-tech, sci-fi frame of reference, while Laeticia's frame of reference is more like fantasy. Some story events and one of the recruitable characters differ depending on your choice of main character. The main characters also have their own battle music. To view all the events and character endings, you will want to play the game twice—a playthrough with each main character.
After choosing a main character, select the Difficulty Level and Voice Language for your game, and confirm. View the opening scenes and you will have control of the Main Character at Larcasse Weald.

Move toward the Next Destination marker () for a short scene. You are then attacked by a Giga Toad. The Main Characters join up here and fight the enemy together. This is a tutorial battle explaining combat basics. Just attack using the skills already assigned to their controller buttons (,,/,,) and the Giga Toad will fall quickly. Another scene follows the battle. After the scene, head southwest and keep moving toward the Next Destination markers. Along the way, you will run into a couple of groups of Mist Graves in tutorial battles. Don't spend time exploring the area now. There will be a much better opportunity to search for items after you reach the next destination.
Follow the path northwest between the pillars. Pass through a narrow area and there will be another tutorial battle with a group of Honeybees. North of the battle site are the remains of a campfire. Press / to investigate the campsite and rest to recover HP.
Head toward the north boundary until you reach some stone stairs going down. Pass between the pillars at the bottom and you will stop for a short scene when you reach an unusable stairway. In this area, you find some small obelisks with blue veins. A tutorial will explain that some objects can be destroyed with a Field Attack. Press / to destroy an obelisk and you may find items.
Heed Albaird and move west to another stairway that you can use. You will have to jump (/) over debris at the bottom of the stairs before you can climb them.
At the top of the stairs, head northwest. Jump onto the fallen arch and cross to another area west. Head northwest and you encounter a group of Corpses on the lower level. After defeating them, head up the northwest stairs and move northeast to another set of stairs. Cross the grassy area to a set of downward stairs.
On this lower level, move east until you reach the entrance to the Mhedume Ruins.
