The campaigns in Tempest Rising feature two distinct 11-mission storylines, one for the Global Defense Force (GDF) and another for the Tempest Dynasty. While the Veti faction does not have its own campaign, it plays a significant role in the existing ones. Both campaigns are considered canon and run in parallel, contributing to a connected overarching narrative of the Tempest War in 1997. Players can choose from four difficulty settings: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Insane, which affect enemy numbers and veterancy. Each mission includes a briefing, customization options via Doctrine and Armory menus, and the introduction of specialist units. Missions consist of primary objectives required for completion and optional secondary objectives that offer benefits. The game also features in-engine CGI cutscenes for each mission.
