While Link's core arsenal in The Wind Waker is formidable, several key items can be upgraded or enhanced to significantly improve your combat prowess, exploration capabilities, and overall survivability. Mastering these enhancements is crucial for tackling the game's later challenges and uncovering all its secrets.

Sword Upgrades: The Legendary Master Sword

Link's primary weapon, the Master Sword, undergoes a significant transformation during your adventure. Its power is directly tied to the Sages of Earth and Wind.

First Enhancement: Power Restoration
- Requirement: Awaken the Earth Sage, Medli, and the Wind Sage, Makar.
- Location (Earth Temple): After completing the Earth Temple and defeating Jalhalla, Medli will awaken as the Earth Sage.
- Location (Wind Temple): After completing the Wind Temple and defeating Molgera, Makar will awaken as the Wind Sage.
- Effect: Once both Sages have awakened, return to the Master Sword's pedestal in Hyrule Castle. Their combined power will fully restore the Master Sword's true strength, allowing it to repel evil and deal significantly more damage to all enemies, especially those corrupted by Ganondorf's magic. This is a story-critical upgrade.

Shield Upgrades: From Wooden to Mirror

Your defensive capabilities are just as important as your offensive ones. Upgrading your shield provides crucial protection against various attacks.

Hero's Shield (Wooden Shield)
- Acquisition: This is your starting shield, given to Link by his Grandma on Outset Island.
- Vulnerability: Be aware that the Hero's Shield is made of wood and is susceptible to fire. If hit by a fire-based attack, it will burn away, leaving you defenseless until you acquire a replacement.
- Replacement: If your Hero's Shield burns, you can purchase a new one from Beedle's Shop Ship for 80 Rupees. Beedle's Shop Ship can be found sailing around various islands, most reliably near Outset Island or Windfall Island.
Mirror Shield
- Acquisition: The Mirror Shield is found within the Earth Temple.
- Location: Progress through the Earth Temple until you reach the large central chamber with the light puzzles. The Mirror Shield is located in a chest after solving these puzzles and navigating the dungeon's unique mechanics involving light reflection.
- Effect: This powerful shield is impervious to fire and can reflect light and certain magical projectiles. It is essential for solving puzzles within the Earth Temple and later dungeons, as well as for deflecting specific enemy attacks.

Wallet Upgrades: Carrying More Rupees

As you progress, you'll find yourself needing to carry more Rupees for various purchases, especially for charts and items from merchants like Beedle. Expanding your wallet capacity is a must.

Small Wallet (200 Rupees)
- Acquisition: This is your starting wallet capacity.
Medium Wallet (1,000 Rupees)
- Location: Head to Windfall Island.
- Steps:
  1. Find the rich lady, Mrs. Marie, who is obsessed with collecting Joy Pendants. She can be found near the schoolhouse or walking around town.
  2. Give her 20 Joy Pendants. Joy Pendants are dropped by Bokoblins and can be found in various treasure chests throughout the Great Sea.
  3. As a reward for your generosity, she will upgrade your wallet, allowing you to carry up to 1,000 Rupees.
Large Wallet (5,000 Rupees)
- Location: Return to Windfall Island and Mrs. Marie.
- Steps:
  1. After acquiring the Medium Wallet, continue collecting Joy Pendants.
  2. Give Mrs. Marie an additional 20 Joy Pendants (for a total of 40).
  3. She will then bestow upon you the Large Wallet, increasing your carrying capacity to a massive 5,000 Rupees, more than enough for any purchase.

Bomb Bag Upgrades: More Explosive Power

Bombs are invaluable for combat, puzzle-solving, and uncovering hidden passages. Increasing your bomb capacity means fewer trips to restock.

Small Bomb Bag (30 Bombs)
- Acquisition: The initial Bomb Bag is found in the Pirate Ship on Windfall Island after you sneak aboard.
Medium Bomb Bag (60 Bombs)
- Location: Head to the Bomb Shop on Windfall Island.
- Steps:
  1. After acquiring the initial Bomb Bag, visit the Bomb Shop.
  2. Speak to the shop owner. He will offer you a "Bomb Bag Upgrade" for 950 Rupees.
  3. Purchase the upgrade to double your bomb capacity to 60.
Large Bomb Bag (99 Bombs)
- Location: This final upgrade requires a bit of treasure hunting and exploration.
- Steps:
  1. Obtain the Treasure Chart #23. This chart is found in a chest on the small island directly south of Needle Rock Isle (D2). You'll need to use a bomb to destroy a rock on the island to reveal the chest.
  2. Sail to the location indicated by Treasure Chart #23. This will lead you to a submerged treasure chest near the Horseshoe Island (G2) sector.
  3. Use your Grappling Hook to retrieve the chest from the seabed. Inside, you will find the Large Bomb Bag, allowing you to carry a maximum of 99 bombs.

Quiver Upgrades: More Arrows for Your Bow

The Hero's Bow is a versatile weapon, and having a larger arrow capacity ensures you're always ready for ranged combat or precise puzzle solutions.

Small Quiver (30 Arrows)
- Acquisition: The Hero's Bow and initial Quiver are found in the Tower of the Gods.
Medium Quiver (60 Arrows)
- Location: Head to the Archery Minigame on Windfall Island.
- Steps:
  1. Participate in the Archery Minigame, located near the entrance to the town.
  2. Achieve a score of 2000 points or higher. This requires precise aiming and quick shooting.
  3. Upon reaching the score, the proprietor will reward you with the Medium Quiver, increasing your arrow capacity to 60.
Large Quiver (99 Arrows)
- Location: This ultimate quiver upgrade is also tied to a treasure chart.
- Steps:
  1. Obtain Treasure Chart #31. This chart is found in a chest on the small island directly north of the Private Oasis (F6) sector. You'll need to use a bomb to destroy a rock on the island to reveal the chest.
  2. Sail to the location indicated by Treasure Chart #31. This will lead you to a submerged treasure chest near the Flight Control Platform (F2) sector.
  3. Use your Grappling Hook to retrieve the chest from the seabed. Inside, you will find the Large Quiver, allowing you to carry a maximum of 99 arrows.
