Discover the hidden bosses in Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement. Learn how to find and defeat the 8-bit Nightmare and other secret encounters.

There are five hidden bosses scattered throughout the game. Three of them are not particularly hard to find, but gaining entry to their location requires a special key. The other two are a little bit more involved. Despite this, all five are relatively easy to reach at the end of the game if you know what you’re doing.

These are listed in the same order as they appear in the Demons section of the archive.

8-bit Nightmare

This is more humorous than anything else, but the enemies you’ll encounter are still pretty high level and can do a lot of damage, so be careful.

Travel to the Teleportation Room in the Hall of Termination. From there, climb up to the ceiling or use Invert. In the middle of the ceiling is a weak point. Break it by whatever means you have available and jump through.

In the next room, a Gamigin will rush at you. Kill it, open the Three Chests, and collect the MP Max Up and HP Max Up. When you’ve down that, go to the left wall and attack the weak spot in the middle of it. This will reveal a path to the next room on the left.

Go through the doorway and investigate the glowing Bookcase next to the painting of Igarashi-san (the game’s Producer).

What follows is a surprisingly long but otherwise simple 8-bit section. Make your way to the right and deal with the various 8-bit enemies as you go. At the end of the section, you’ll go through a door and meet the Eight Bit Overlord. Upon defeating it, you’ll be returned to the room with the glowing Bookcase. Open the Green Chest next to it to receive the 8-bit Nightmare item. The chest only appears once, but you can repeat the section for a chance to get more as a drop.

Description

Eight Bit Overlord is a fun little diversion from the main game. It’s a pretty authentic 8-bit style boss heavily steeped in patterns and terrible hitboxes. Most of its attacks aren’t too difficult to deal with, but there are a couple of attacks that are tough, so you’ll want to make sure you take it out quickly to minimize how often you deal with those attacks.

Overlord Phase 1
  • Hop – The Overlord will crouch down a bit and lift its wings as if to fly, but it will just hop about most of the way across the screen. It’s possible to duck to avoid this attack if you know it’s coming.
  • Flying Stomp – The Overlord will crouch down and lift its wings before leaping into the air to fly. When you see it start this, duck down in case it goes for the Hop attack instead. Once it’s in the air, it will hover left and right towards you. After a short period of time, it will turn red and stomp down to the ground. When it lands, columns of flame will erupt from where it is and create a wave effect as they move outward towards the edge of the screen. Back up a little bit and Double Jump over the peak of the wave. Land on the left side of it and you may have a chance to get a couple more attacks in before it continues.
  • Great Balls of Fire – The Overlord will back into a corner, stand tall, and lift its wings over its head. After a moment, it will spit out a series of fireballs. This will attach around the room before erupting in turn into pillars of flame. It doesn’t hit as hard as some other attacks and it’s a long attack, so you may want to take the hit and keep on dealing damage. If you instead want to avoid all damage, the safest thing to do is crouch down in the far corner of the room.
  • Flame Surfing – The Overlord will assume the same position as Great Balls of Fire, standing tall with wings overhead, but it will also turn red at the same time. After a moment, a series of flame columns will start moving towards you along the floor and ceiling from behind the Overlord. These columns will take the shape of waves. If your timing is spot on, it’s possible to get very close to the Overlord and get hits in as you use Double Jump to thread the needle to stay safe.
Overlord Phase 2 (<50% Health)
  • Tall Hop – The Overlord can now perform a taller hop in addition to the short one. It can do this hop backward as well.
  • Super Stomp – The Overlord will perform the same actions as the Flying Stomp, but it won’t be in the air as long and will create several fireballs in addition to the flame columns. These balls of fire will land around the room and erupt into pillars of flame just after the wave has passed.
  • Super Balls of Fire – The Overlord will do the same actions os Great Balls of Fire, but a single column wave will come out from behind it as well. You may want to invert into the far corner by the ceiling to avoid this.
  • Super Flame Surfing – This starts out like Flame Surfing but the waves at the top and bottom don’t line-up. You’ll need to jump over the waves on the floor at the middle of the screen. If you time it right, a small gap will open up as you’re sailing over the middle at t
