Master Left 4 Dead 2 Special Infected like Hunter, Smoker, Boomer, Charger, Spitter, Jockey, and Tank with detailed strategies and tips.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Hunter: Crouch and fire to pounce, aiming for more damage from farther away. Pouncing can also be used for long and high jumps. After prying yourself from a Survivor, run. Survivors covered in Boomer vomit are ideal targets. If a Smoker is pulling a Survivor, pounce anyone trying to save them, or pounce the victim to let the Smoker grab someone else. This also applies to Jockeys, but not Chargers. Pouncing a Survivor on an Acid Puddle is effective. Aim slightly higher than the Survivor for pouncing damage. When pouncing from high areas, try not to miss to deal damage on the first pounce. The Hunter is the only Infected capable of attacking an Incapacitated Survivor with his ability, besides the Boomer and Spitter. Stealth is key; sneak up and pounce to cause panic and allow other infected to attack. Light yourself on fire to incapacitate a Survivor from 80 HP in about 5 seconds.
  2. 2
Smoker: Select a Survivor, aim, and fire to pull them (crosshairs turn red when able). If you miss, you must wait a few seconds. If repelled, wait a few moments. High points are preferred locations. Try pulling Survivors towards ledges, Alarm Cars, Witches, or other obstacles. Coordinate with Boomers to vomit on Survivors when they are close. Pull Survivors downward; fall damage counts. Incapacitated Survivors cannot be pulled. Attack from long-range. Survivors being ridden by a Jockey can be pulled, though it's inefficient.
  3. 3
Boomer: When close enough, aim and vomit. You will have to wait a long time before vomiting again. If you survive vomiting, run away and try to vomit a second time. Tight corners are good ambush spots. You can vomit on a helpless or downed Survivor. A Survivor on a ladder is completely helpless. Avoid thin walls. Boomer Bile does not overlap, so don't try to explode on a Survivor after vomiting on them. You can change your vomiting direction to cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects) more Survivors.
  4. 4
Charger: Find a Survivor and charge straight at them, aiming to grab one. Chargers excel in narrow hallways. Charge into a cluster of Survivors; anyone not caught by the arm will be knocked down and stunned. Chargers can also bring Survivors to ledges. Charge from the front, not behind, and attack as close as possible. The Charger is essentially a reverse Smoker.
  5. 5
Spitter: Simply point and shoot. Spit on clusters of Survivors or areas they must pass through to delay them. A trapped Survivor is a good target for an Acid Puddle. Only spit on an Incapacitated Survivor to prevent rescues. Spitters can detonate dropped Fuel Cans. Acid Puddles do not damage other Infected, only the Spitter herself. Try to stay out of sight. Any helpless Survivor is doomed to an Acid Puddle.
  6. 6
Jockey: Run towards Survivors and leap onto them to gain control, then steer them towards obstacles. Other Special Infected also count as obstacles. Aim for healthier Survivors as they move faster. If no obstacles are available, steer the victim as far away from their friends as possible. The recharge time for the Jockey's leap is much longer if you incapacitate a Survivor. Jockeys can leap onto Survivors being pulled by a Smoker.
  7. 7
Tank: Act fast when controlling the Tank, or someone else will take over. If someone else controls the Tank, use it as a distraction or help it. If Survivors are far away, chuck a rock; the Tank can look around and aim while throwing but cannot move. Avoid open areas and fire. Toss Cars and other large objects. Some walls can be destroyed, allowing for ambushes.
Tips
  • A team of Spitter, Hunter, and Boomer can be deadly: the Hunter pounces, the Spitter spits acid, and the Boomer vomits, causing confusion and allowing the Spitter's and Boomer's effects to pay off while the Survivor is incapacitated.
  • A team of Hunter, Jockey, Charger, and Smoker is also powerful, as their attacks leave victims helpless. If all four land their attacks, all Survivors will be helpless.
  • If a helpless Survivor is about to be rescued, attack the rescue party.
  • When playing as a Hunter, stealth is a priority; sneak up and pounce to cause panic and allow other infected to attack.
  • As a Hunter, always try to light yourself on fire to incapacitate a Survivor quickly.
  • When playing as a Smoker, try pulling Survivors towards ledges, or towards Alarm Cars/Witches and other obstacles.
  • Work with Boomers so they can vomit on Survivors when they are close enough to the Smoker.
  • When playing as a Charger, charge straight into a cluster of Survivors; anyone not caught by the arm will be knocked down and stunned.
  • When playing as a Spitter, try spitting on areas the Survivors MUST go in order to delay them.
  • When playing as a Jockey, think of whatever obstacle comes to mind and steer the Survivor there.
  • When playing as a Tank, avoid the open, and avoid fire.
  • When playing as a Tank, there are some walls in some levels that can be destroyed for ambushes.
