Master Choco Island 2, Banshee Boardwalk, Sky Garden, and Yoshi Circuit in the Lightning Cup. Learn about Mario Kart DS items like the Lightning.
Choco Island 2 (SNES)
This course starts with a couple of tight turns that can be navigated with power slides. The middle of the track features a large mud puddle that significantly slows down racers, especially those with heavy characters. Beyond the mud puddle are numerous bumps that hinder high-speed travel. Staying on the track is crucial, as running off into the dark brown areas will drastically reduce your speed.
Banshee Boardwalk (N64)
Most of this course is on a boardwalk, with some sections lacking boundaries. Several sharp turns can be managed with power sliding. Inside the haunted house, go right and drift around the wall, then stay to the right of the column to avoid a pit. Be sure to stay left enough to avoid the bats, which will knock you around but not spin you out. Continue drifting around the next few corners and exit the house, then power slide/drift around a few more easy turns to finish.
Sky Garden (GBA)
This cloud-filled stage is mostly straightforward, with boost ramps over track gaps. A boost ramp in the middle area allows you to cut a corner. Most turns can be handled with power sliding, including a hairpin turn later in the lap. Since there are no boundaries, staying on the track prevents you from falling out of the sky.
Yoshi Circuit (GCN)
The final course in the Retro Grand Prix is shaped like Yoshi. It's generally easy, except for a few tight corners manageable with power sliding. The second half of the track has hairpin turns. Piranha plants line the track near the end, but they will not attack you in Mario Kart DS.
Items
General Item Mechanics:
Bananas, Green/Red Shells, Bob-ombs, and Fake Item Boxes can be dragged behind your kart by holding X before releasing. This prevents opponents from ramming you from behind.
Banana: A classic peel that can be dropped behind or thrown ahead to cause a spin-out upon impact.
Blooper: When used against you, Blooper squirts ink on your screen, temporarily hindering vision. The map (minimap (the small circular map in the bottom-left corner of your screen)) can be used for guidance while the ink clears.
Bob-omb: This bomb can be thrown ahead and explodes if someone drives past it or after a few seconds. Anyone in the blast radius is spun out briefly.
Boo: Steals an opponent's item and gives it to you. It also turns you invisible for a short period, making you untargetable.
Bullet Bill: Transforms you into a Bullet Bill, rocketing along the course and knocking over any karts in your path.
Fake Item Box: Looks like a real item box but is a trap. Opponents driving into it will be knocked over. On the map (minimap), Fake Item Boxes appear as red boxes, while real item boxes look like actual item boxes.
Golden Mushroom: Allows unlimited boosts by repeatedly pressing X for a short duration, useful for gaining ground.
Green Shell: Can be launched ahead or behind. It travels straight, bouncing off obstacles until it falls off the track or hits a target.
Lightning: An extremely rare item that spins out all other karts, shrinks them to a miniature size, and makes them lose all their items. The shrinking effect is brief but significantly slows down opponents.
Mushroom: Provides a brief turbo boost, helpful for recovering from collisions or overtaking opponents near the finish line.
Red Shell: Hones in on the nearest opponent ahead (or behind if dropped) to attack, making it more effective than a Green Shell.
