- 1Obtain Advanced Mineral Scanner: After recruiting the Professor, speak with Miranda Lawson about upgrades. This upgrade significantly speeds up resource gathering.
- 2Purchase Probes: Probes can be bought from Fuel Depots found in most nebulas.
- 3Scan for Resources: Select a planet and choose to scan it. Hold the right mouse button and move the mouse around the planet ("scrubbing") while observing the scanner meter. When the meter spikes, slow down your mouse movement to pinpoint the highest spike. Press the left mouse button to launch a probe and collect resources.
- 4Discover N7 Missions: Scanning planets is essential for finding N7 missions. When exploring a planet, EDI will announce if an anomaly is detected. Use the scanning reticule to locate the anomaly. Listening to the beacon recording can also help, as the signal strengthens when closer to the anomaly.

- The scanner indicates the relative wealth of a planet, but resources can still be found on poor or depleted planets.
- It's generally not necessary to extensively mine every planet due to their abundance.
- Many N7 planets are rich in resources, saving time.
