Begin your adventure in My Time at Portia by finding Edward, mastering combat against Tunoco Lizards, and learning to gather items.
After you recompose yourself and find out Trip can talk through a funny helmet, you'll obtain the Weird Pad. The Weird Pad is the main hub for options. In the beginning you won't have much to choose, but as you progress you'll unlock more functions. You can access it by pressing the Touch Pad.
Objective: Find Edward
Go to the area marked on the minimap (a small map displayed on your HUD (heads-up display — the on-screen icons showing health, ammo and the minimap), showing your immediate surroundings), jumping through the ledges, to find a girl running away from a group of lizards. Time for some combat.
Combat
Objective: Chase off the lizards
Combat in My Time at Portia follows the hack-n-slash formula. You have a green bar representing your HP (Health Points) and a blue bar representing your SP (Stamina Points) on the top left corner of the screen. Using Strong Attacks or Unique Actions deplete your SP bar, so use them to finish off enemies after using normal attacks.
You'll be facing off against three level 1 Tunoco Lizards, very weak enemies. Attack with normal attacks three times to create an opening for a Strong Attack with which has AOE (Area of Effect) damage or a flurry of swings with your Unique Action. The lizards are nothing of note and will go down quickly. You'll also earn EXP (Experience Points) from combat, which makes you level up.
You'll also pop a trophy here for defeating your first enemy: Novice Hunter - Defeated your first monster.
After the lizards are defeated, the girl will introduce herself as Rem and her dragon companion Growler. After the scene (a non-interactive sequence that advances the story) ends, you'll unlock the Items function on your Weird Pad. Register the potions to proceed. You can now open the Bag with the designated button and select any item you've registered. Useful for when you're in a pickle or preparing for a tough fight.
Objective: Search for the Bone Dragon
From here on out, you'll see vegetation and other fauna and flora sparkle, which means that you can gather them.
Gathering Items
Gathering is one of the core mechanics of the game. It allows you to collect useful items that you can use in your many lives. They can appear as sparkling items in the area or as treasure chests. Be sure to collect everything you can find to make your life easier later on. Each item has a 999 limit on your Bag, so search every nook and cranny for shiny items and shake every tree you can find for a Bag full of goodies.
From the area where you met Rem, go right, collecting everything you find, and climb the ledge in front of you. Drop down to find a treasure chest behind some boxes that you can destroy with your mighty branch. Open it to get 3 HP Potions. There's also a Palm Tree here that you can shake for some Mystfruit, a HP recovering fruit.
Now go to the beach to find a new enemy, the Tropical Frog. Deal with them quickly and then keep going right, crossing the wooden bridge to reach the other side of the beach. Climb the ledges to find your boney friend surrounded by Paladins. Approach them for a scene after which you'll be taken to the Capital of Mysteria.
