Start your adventure
Embark on your Pokémon Scarlet adventure! Choose your starter, battle rivals like Nemona and Arven, explore Paldea, and learn about Terastallization in this comprehensive guide.
Follow the story and the tutorials. At some point you may choose your first Pokémon partner. You spend some time with all the starter Pokémon before you make your choice.
You can choose one of the following Pokémon:
- Sprigatito, the Grass Cat Pokémon
- Fuecoco, the Fire Croc Pokémon
- Quaxly, the Duckling Pokémon
Tip: Choose the Pokémon you like. There are plenty of Pokémon to catch in the wild, so do not feel limited by that.
After you choose your Pokémon, you can have your first rival battle with a girl named Nemona. (She chooses the starter that is weak against your starter Pokémon.) After the battle with Nemona, follow her and she teaches you how to catch a wild Pokémon.
You can take your time to explore the area. (If your Pokémon get tired, Nemona can heal them for you.) After that, continue with the story. You meet the Legendary Pokémon of your version (Koraidon in Pokémon Scarlet and Miraidon in Pokémon Violet). At the lighthouse, a boy named Arven challenges you to a Pokémon battle. He has one Pokémon (Skwovet). His Pokémon is Lv. 5 and it is a Normal-type Pokemon. After the battle, Arven gives you the Legendary Pokémon (that you can use as a mount later in the game).
Go to Los Platos, a small town nearby. Nemona gives you 5,000 League Points (LP) and Pokémon materials. You can connect with other players (local or online) using the Poké Portal option in the main menu. Head to Mesagoza, the big city up the hill.
At the gate of the big city, Nemona catches up to you. She challenges you to a battle. Nemona has a second Pokémon now. Her starter is Lv. 8. Her second Pokémon (Pawmi) is Lv. 9. It is an Electric-type Pokémon. Use Pokémon that are effective against Electric-type Pokémon, so Ground-type Pokémon (for example Wooper). Be careful with Pokémon that are weak against Electric-type Pokémon, so Flying-type and Water-type Pokémon.
When you explore the city, you meet Team Star. A Team Star Grunt challenges you to a battle. The grunt has one Pokémon (Shroodle) that is Lv. 8. It is a Poison- and Normal-type Pokémon. Use a Ground-, Psychic- or Fighting-type Pokémon. Be careful with Fairy- and Grass-type Pokémon. After the battle, Nemona gives you a Tera Orb. In you second battle with Team Star, you can Terastallize your Pokémon. This Team Star Grunt has also one Pokémon (Yungoos), a Normal-type Pokémon that is Lv. 9. Terastallize your Pokémon to win the battle.
The next destination is the academy. You get to introduce yourself during the first class. As for the answers to the questions, the answers have a minor influence on the dialogue, but no major influence on the story. After that, new classes become available to take. You can sign up for all kinds of classes at the desk in the entrance hall. Refer to section Classes for more details about the classes at the academy.
During your first days at the academy, possible goals and adventures that you can pursue become clear. The tutorial ends with an explanation of the Treasure Hunt event.
Author's note: I describe a recommended route in this walkthrough, but feel free to decide where you want to go. The recommended route is based on the levels of the Pokémon that you battle during the challenges.
I recommend to start at the first Gym. Refer to section Cortondo Gym.

Guide and Walkthrough (NS) by Silica (3)
Comprehensive walkthrough for Pokémon Scarlet by Silica, covering the main story, post-game content, DLCs (The Teal Mask, The Indigo Disk), and Pokédex. Updated January 15, 2024.
Hello, my name is Denise (alias Silica) and I love the Pokémon series and I enjoy playing the Pokémon games. I saw that there was a demand for a walkthrough for this specific game, so that is how I ended up writing this walkthrough. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were released on the Nintendo Switch in November 2022. In the game, you go on an adventure accompanied by your Pokémon. These games have different goals than you are used to from the other Pokémon games.
I was really looking forward to these Pokémon games, because I was very excited about the previous Pokémon games: Sword, Shield and Arceus. I did a blind playthrough of the Pokémon Violet game. I enjoyed this experience very much. That is why I did my best to make this walkthrough spoiler free.
I wrote this walkthrough because there was a demand for it on GameFAQs. Here you can read about how to play the main story of the game, as well as the postgame story and other content. If you like my walkthrough, you can make a donation by clicking the Donate button at the top.
