Learn about all status ailments like Death, Poison, and Charm, and how demon negotiation works in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux.

Status Ailments

Status ailments are negative effects that can hinder your party in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux. Some persist after battle, while others wear off.

  • Death: Occurs when a demon's HP reaches 0. The demon returns to stock and is dead until resurrected. If resurrected in-battle via the Invitation spell, the demon remains active. If the main character's HP reaches 0, it is game over unless the Dragon Ring is equipped, which saves you once per battle, similar to the demon skill "Enduring Soul".
  • Poison: HP decreases once every turn or tile of movement on the field. This effect does not go away after battle.
  • Strain: MP decreases once every turn or tile of movement on the field. , but may disappear after a turn during battle.
  • Paralyze: The target cannot evade and their defense drops, making them take more damage. They will also occasionally lose their turn. .
  • Sleep: The target is asleep and unable to act. They regenerate a very tiny amount of HP and MP per turn while sleeping. If hit while sleeping, they take much more damage and cannot evade. A sleeping character is also eligible to be instantly killed by the Eternal Rest spell. This effect does disappear after a battle ends.
  • Mute: The target cannot use any spells or skills. .
  • Charm: The target loses control and will attack random allies using the basic Attack command. Wears off naturally after several turns or after battle ends.
  • Stone: The target is turned to Stone and cannot act. They will take less damage but cannot be healed. If the Main Character becomes petrified, it is game over. . Null Curse may prevent this effect on the Main Character.
  • Fear: The target will randomly lose their turn. A demon affected by this will randomly return to stock. Wears off after several turns or when the battle ends.
  • Bomb: The target becomes a living bomb. If struck, the target has a 50% chance of exploding, killing them and dealing damage equal to current HP to all of their allies. If the target uses the Defend command, the chance becomes 0% while defending. Wears off at the end of battle.
  • Rage: The target loses control and will use the basic Attack command on random targets (including allies, but not themselves) and will do increased damage.

Demon Negotiation

Demon negotiation allows you to recruit demons to your party. You can initiate negotiation by selecting "Talk" during a battle with an enemy demon, provided they are not "Dark-" aligned (unless specific conditions are met) and are not Enemy Search specific enemies.

Basic "Talk" Negotiation

  1. Initiate conversation with a demon by selecting "Talk" in battle.
  2. You will receive dialogue, including notes about alignment differences.
  3. Choose one of 2 or 3 response options.

Alignment Effects:

  • Item/Macca Costs: Demons of the same alignment will ask for fewer items/less Macca and drain less HP/MP. Opposite alignment demons ask for more. Neutral alignments result in middling amounts.
  • Recruitment Chance: Alignment also affects the chance of a demon joining you after meeting their demands.

Response Likelihood:

  • Responses are based on the demon's personality type and the specific demon.
  • For example, Jack personality demons (like Jack Frost) generally like the response "Adventuring" to "What's a hee-human doing here, ho?" and dislike "Research."
  • For the question "Hee-ho! Come closer, ho.", the "Get closer" option is generally positive across all personality types, though there's a small chance the demon may attack.
  • Some responses are liked more by specific demons within a personality type. For Jack personalities, "Not really" is generally liked more than "It does" in response to "Doesn't that scare you, ho...?"
Tips
  • Be aware of the Moon phase; a full moon can alter negotiation mechanics.
  • Consult demon databases for hidden ailment resistance properties if needed.
  • Pay attention to the demon's personality and dialogue to choose the best response.
