State of Decay DLC: Breakdown is a sandbox mode. Learn about its levels, heroes, and how it differs from the main game.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Select 'Breakdown' from the main menu to start.
  2. 2
You begin as a random character until heroes are unlocked.
  3. 3
Build up a base and a team of survivors.
  4. 4
    Find and repair an RV.
  5. 5
When ready, load the RV with Lily and up to 6 chosen survivors by tabbing over and selecting them. Failure to do so results in starting the new level with only one character and Lily.
  6. 6
Repair the RV to leave the valley for a higher level.
  7. 7
After leaving in the RV, you will eventually break down at a random location and must start again by finding a new base and repairing a new RV.

Breakdown Details:

  • Each level becomes harder with more zombies (including freaks) that deal more damage, fewer supplies, and fewer vehicles.
  • Difficulty levels off at level 12 and remains constant up to level 99.
  • There are 99 levels, but you can continue playing beyond that, with the level display remaining at 99.
  • Levels 1-6 feature unlockable 'heroes' (well-known survivors like Marcus, Ed, Maya; unplayable characters like the Judge, Becca Collins; and new characters like Walter, Leon).
  • Unlocked heroes may have harder-to-find weapons, leveled-up skills, or radio options (artillery support, vehicle delivery, words of inspiration, back up).
  • You can unlock heroes from your current level and any previous ones.
  • Unlocked heroes can be selected as your starting character for new games.
  • Your RV has a total capacity of 7 people (Lily + 6 survivors).
  • Your storage locker carries over, but most supplies do not, with limits of up to 10 food, 10 medicine, 10 ammo, 30 ammo (sic), and 4 fuel.

Differences from the original State of Decay:

  • Survivors (including heroes and your original player) can die permanently.
  • Survivors can run away or commit suicide, requiring attention to moods and a counselor.
  • Some bases have reduced restrictions for moving in; Snyder's Trucking Warehouse requires only 10 people.
  • The entire map is available from the beginning.
  • Previously unplayable characters are now playable as unlockable heroes, alongside new survivors.
  • The game can end if everyone dies.
  • A 'Check-in' feature shows the location of survivors away from base, allowing you to direct them back or to the RV.
Tips
  • Pay close attention to survivor moods to prevent them from running away or committing suicide.
  • Ensure you select your desired survivors when loading the RV to avoid starting a new level with only Lily.
  • Be prepared for increasingly difficult levels with fewer resources as you progress.
