Learn how to beat Vidarr, the boss at Martel Temple in Tales of Symphonia. Get tips on its HP, weaknesses, and the strategy to win.

Stats / Weaknesses:

  • Name: Vidarr
  • Location: Martel Temple
  • HP: 4,000
  • TP: 30
  • XP: 115
  • ATK: 210
  • DEF: 21
  • Gald: 25
  • Items dropped: Life Bottle
  • Steal: None
  • Elemental Info: Weak to None, Strong to None, AA: None

Phases:

  1. Phase 1: Solo Vidarr

As soon as the battle starts, use a Magic Lens to get a read on his HP. Your main goal here is to just wail on him. Don't give him much breathing room to counterattack.

  2. Phase 2: Vidarr + Ally

If Vidarr starts guarding mid-combo, block immediately to take less damage. After you've dealt about 500 damage, a cutscene will play, and a red-haired man (Kratos) will join the fight. Keep up the pressure and don't let up until he's defeated.

Strategy:

  • Don't be intimidated by this being your first boss! The strategy is pretty straightforward: attack, attack, attack.
  • Use a Magic Lens right away to keep an eye on Vidarr's HP.
  • If he starts a combo and goes into a guard stance, be ready to block.
  • Once Kratos joins the fight, it becomes much easier. Just keep the offense going.

After the battle, you'll get a scene and officially gain Kratos as a party member. You'll find yourselves in a three-way split room. Head through the 'E' path, and when you reach the end, go down the stairs.

You'll enter a room where another scene triggers, followed by a fight against a Golem. After that, the scene continues, and you'll see a room with a distinctive floor pattern:

You'll see that the floor is kinda like this.

| _ _ _ | You'll see that the floor is kinda like this.

| |4| |5| |6| | |=|: Stairs
| _ _ _ | (S): Sorcerer's Ring
| |7| |8| |9| |

|=|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|=|

Here's how to navigate this puzzle: After defeating a Golem, it turns into a rock. You need to push these rocks into specific holes to create bridges. First, push one rock into the middle hole on the right side [6]. Then, push another rock into the middle hole on the left side [4]. Head down the stairs to the southeast, go up the right path, and push a block west to drop it into an opening. Cross this to find a chest with a 'Life Bottle'. Do the same for the other side: push a block into the middle hole on the right side [6], go down the stairs to the southwest, go up the path to the left, push a block east, cross it, and grab the 'Panacea Bottle' from the chest. Finally, kill two more Golems and drop them into the middle hole on the upper side [2]. Go down the stairs, head up the path, and push the second rock north to complete the stone bridge. Cross it, and a scene will trigger.

After the scene, you'll learn how to use the Sorcerer's Ring by pressing the 'X' button. This ring can freeze enemies to help you avoid battles, so keep that in mind! Return to the floor with all the holes and go up the stairs on the northwest side.

In the next room, follow the path. You'll find three chests containing '250 Gald', a 'Life Bottle', and an 'Apple Gel'. Now, head back to the beginning – the room with the three-way split. Go up the 'N' path and use the Sorcerer's Ring on the wall to activate a warp portal. Head through it.

At the top, another scene will play. After it, talk to your party members, then go back down the warp portal and make your way back to Iselia.

Once you arrive in Iselia, turn right and go to Colette's house (the one with the well outside). A scene will trigger inside. Afterwards, head to Genis' house, which is on the west side of town (the one with the water puddle outside). Enter it, and another scene will play, during which Genis teaches you about cooking. Now, go to the school and talk to Raine. Genis will then obtain the title 'Brotherly Love'.

Continue south, and as you try to exit the village, another scene will trigger with Noishe, Lloyd's pet. Outside Iselia, head northwest and enter Iselia Forest.

Follow the path in Iselia Forest. When you have the option to turn right, instead go left (a tree is blocking the way) to find an 'Apple Gel' in a chest. Keep following the path and grab the 'Life Bottle' from another chest. Continue until a scene triggers. Go down the left path, and another scene will kick in. Afterwards, move north. Go to the west side of the wall to trigger yet another scene. After this scene, when you regain control, move to the east side of the wall, jump up the cliffs, and on the large one, jump right to find an 'Orange Gel' in a chest. Now, jump up the left cliff...
