Walkthrough
  1. 1
Farming Runes: Since runes are not magical items, items with “Better Chance of Finding Magical Item” will not increase their drop rate. They count as “normal” items, so the only way to get more runes is to increase the number of drops through volume farming. Target areas packed with normal enemies like The Secret Cow Level or the Flayer Jungle, or areas with high enemy density. Lower Kurast runs are also effective for plundering regularly-spawning chests. Be aware that farming can be tedious, and some runes can take thousands of runs and tens of thousands of kills to find.
  2. 2
Upgrading Runes: Runes can be upgraded using the Horadric Cube. Initially, three runes of the same type are needed to upgrade to the next higher rune. For example, three El runes yield an Eld, and three Eld runes transmute into a Tir. As you progress to low-mid-tier runes, you will need to add a Gem of a varying type and quality to the recipe. This process continues up to the Zod rune. There are 33 different types of runes in total.
  3. 3
Removing Runes: To remove runes or gems from socketed items, use the following Horadric Cube recipe: 1x Hel Rune + Scroll of Town Portal + Socketed Item. Place these items in the Horadric Cube and transmute. This process will destroy the runes/gems but recover the base item.

Tips
  • Farming runes requires patience, as drop rates for higher-tier runes can be very low, potentially requiring thousands of runs and tens of thousands of kills.
  • Don't focus solely on farming one type of item to avoid burnout. Mix up your farming routes and targets.
  • The upgrade hierarchy of runes is mostly determined by the order of upgrade, but generally, higher level runes are higher up on the hierarchy.
  • When upgrading runes, ensure you have the correct type and quality of gem as specified in the upgrade recipes for runes beyond the initial tiers.
