Guide to exploring with the submarine in Final Fantasy VII, including finding the Oritsuru, Steal As Well Materia, Key of Ancients, and navigating the Gelnika.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Return to Wutai and enter the cave with the fire near the Da-chao Statues.
  2. 2
Use the Leviathan Scales to clear the flames and open a chest containing the Oritsuru.
  3. 3
Head north to the top of the cavern, then east and south to find more flames.
  4. 4
Use Leviathan Scales to douse the flames and uncover the Steal As Well Materia.
  5. 5
Return to the world map outside Junon and save your game.
  6. 6
Board the submarine and dive by pressing [X] (or [Cancel]).
  7. 7
Avoid the Emerald Weapon, a powerful optional superboss, which may be found in this area.
  8. 8
Sail south and locate the red Shinra submarine you sunk earlier.
  9. 9
Approach the submarine to recover the Huge Materia it was transporting.
  10. 10
Sail north along the eastern continental shelf, past Junon, and towards the northern continent.
  11. 11
Pass north of Costa del Sol and follow the cliffs into a cubby to the north.
  12. 12
Turn east and sail down a tunnel in the cliffs.
  13. 13
Run into a strange object at the end of the tunnel to find the “Key of Ancients”.
  14. 14
Sail out of the tunnel and follow the continental shelf south, sticking to the western cliffs.
  15. 15
Find a path leading east, at the end of which is another tunnel.
  16. 16
Follow this tunnel to a circular cavern where you can surface, reaching the lake where Lucrecia lurks (recommended with Vincent in your party).
  17. 17
Continue following the western continental shelf east, then head south through the narrow gap north of Costa del Sol.
  18. 18
Follow the western cliffs south until you find a passage running south-west.
  19. 19
Sail into the airplane wreckage (the Gelnika) lying on the ocean floor. Ensure you have Ribbons equipped and save before entering, as Emerald Weapon may be nearby.
  20. 20
Climb down the ladder into the Gelnika and continue west to find a Save Point.
  21. 21
Loot a chest to the west to obtain the sword Heaven’s Cloud.
  22. 22
Continue west through the doorway to trigger a boss battle against Reno and Rude.
  23. 23
Before defeating them, steal from Reno to obtain the Tough Ring (or Touph Ring in the Playstation version) and from Rude to obtain the Ziedrich.
  24. 24
After the boss battle, head north through the door to the cargo room.
  25. 25
Explore the Cargo Room and the adjacent Research Room for valuable items.
Tips
  • The Steal As Well Materia allows you to steal from an enemy when you use the Steal command, but it's generally best to avoid harming the target while attempting to steal.
  • Emerald Weapon is an optional superboss that is very difficult to defeat early in the game; avoid it if possible.
  • The Gelnika contains some of the strongest enemies in the game; equip Ribbons to protect against status effects like Confusion and Paralysis.
  • Consider equipping Enemy Away Materia to reduce encounters within the Gelnika.
  • Many enemies within the Gelnika can be Morphed into Source items, which permanently raise character stats.
  • The Tough Ring grants significant boosts to Vitality and Spirit.
  • The Ziedrich offers excellent defensive stats and halves all elemental damage but has no Materia sockets.
  • If you do not visit the Gelnika in Disc 2, Reno and Rude will not be present in Disc 3, making it impossible to steal the Tough Ring and Ziedrich from them.
  • Oritsuru (Yuffie weapon)
  • Steal As Well Materia
  • Huge Materia
  • “Key of Ancients”
  • Heaven’s Cloud (sword)
  • Tough Ring (from Reno)
  • Ziedrich (from Rude)
  • Various Source items (by Morphing enemies in the Gelnika)
