Green and Blue

Learn how to breed Green and Blue Chocobos in Final Fantasy VII! Get Carob Nuts, feed Sylkis Greens, and find out where these special Chocobos can take you.

Alright, so you've got your Chocobos, but now you want to get those special Green and Blue ones, right? It's a bit of a process, but totally worth it for the areas they unlock. First things first, you'll need a special item: the Carob Nut. You can't just buy these, unfortunately. You'll have to go out and steal them from a monster called a Vlakorados. These big red dinos hang out on some islands between the western and northern continents, kind of northwest of Costa del Sol. They've got a lot of HP, so be prepared for a bit of a fight, but just keep stealing from them until you get a Carob Nut. You'll want to grab at least three of these, but honestly, luck plays a big part, so have a few extra just in case.

Now, for the actual breeding part. You'll need four 'Good' or 'Great' Chocobos – two males and two females. Make sure you've got those Carob Nuts handy, and here's the kicker: a massive stock of Sylkis Greens. We're talking at least twenty greens for *each* Chocobo you plan to breed. If you haven't been stocking up, you can grab them from the Chocobo Sage.

Head back to the Chocobo Ranch. You *can* race your Chocobos beforehand to improve your odds, but it's not strictly necessary for getting the Green or Blue ones. Once you're at the ranch, feed each of your chosen Chocobos twenty Sylkis Greens. Then, pick a male and female you want to breed – remember, it can be two Greats, two Goods, or one of each. After feeding them and selecting them, confirm the breeding and give them a Carob Nut. Keep your fingers crossed, and you should get a new Chocobo, hopefully a Green or Blue one!

If you don't get the color you want on your first try (and trust me, it happens!), don't despair. You have a couple of options. You can reload your save from before you fed them the greens and try feeding them slightly different amounts (like twenty-one to one of them) or try breeding a different pair of Chocobos. If that doesn't work, fight about a dozen battles and then try breeding again. It's all about re-rolling those results.

Once you finally get a Green or Blue Chocobo, you can actually breed *that* colored bird with another Good or Great Chocobo (yeah, even its parents, which is a bit weird!) to try and get the *other* color. Or, you can just keep trying with your original Good/Great Chocobos. It's pretty random, so just keep at it! Personally, I've found luck tends to favor getting a Green Chocobo first, then breeding that Green one with a Good or Great Chocobo to get a Blue one.

So, what's the big deal with these colored Chocobos? Well, the Green Chocobo can hop over mountains! This lets you reach some really important places like Lucrecia's Cave, the cave with the Mime Materia on the southern tip of Wutai island, and the Ancient Forest. The Blue Chocobo is also super useful, letting you cross shallow waters. This is how you'll get to the cave containing the Quadra Magic Materia, located in the archipelago northeast of Mideel.
