Gran Turismo 2 features two primary modes: Arcade and Simulation. In Arcade mode, players can freely select courses and vehicles. Simulation mode, however, requires players to earn driver's licenses, purchase vehicles, and win trophies to unlock new tracks. The game boasts approximately 620 cars and 27 race tracks. Unlike its predecessor, players can race events individually rather than as part of a tournament. Qualifying for starting grid positions is no longer possible. The game also introduced rally racing on winding dirt tracks, including variations of Pikes Peak like Hill Climb and Downhill. Gran Turismo 2 was the first in the series to support DualShock vibration and also offered compatibility with the NeGcon controller and many third-party steering wheel controllers. The game expanded upon the original by including both featured circuits and race cars by series.
