What is Snagging/Shadow Pokémon?

Snagging is an illegal act where ordinary Poké Balls are converted into Snag Balls using a special Snag Machine, allowing you to steal Trainers' Pokémon. You'll be doing this to capture 48 unique Shadow Pokémon created by the criminal syndicate Cipher. These Pokémon have had their hearts artificially closed, severing their bond with Trainers and sometimes causing them to act erratically. Your mission is to save them all. Many of these Shadow Pokémon are from older games like Gold and Silver, providing an extra incentive if you're a fan.

Shadow Pokémon only know the move Shadow Rush, a typeless attack with 90 Power, 100 Accuracy, and infinite PP. It inflicts 12.5% recoil damage. Shadow Pokémon do not gain EXP directly; instead, they have a 5-level Heart Gauge that you need to empty by keeping them in your party, battling with them, using the Day-Care center, or using Scents. Calling out their name can also help manage their state.

When a Shadow Pokémon uses Shadow Rush, it might enter Hyper Mode. In this state, you can't use items on it, and it may not obey you. Critical Hits are more likely when using Shadow Rush in Hyper Mode. Calling its name can dispel this mode.

Once a Shadow Pokémon is 40% purified, it starts accumulating EXP and EVs, though these are only fully realized upon complete purification at the Relic Stone in Agate Village. At 20% purification, it remembers its first move; at 60%, its second; and at 80%, its third. Its nature is revealed at 40%.

Upon complete purification at the Relic Stone, the Pokémon will forget Shadow Rush, learn a new, often powerful, fourth move, and regain all accumulated EXP and EVs, usually resulting in several level-ups. It will also receive a Ribbon, and you can rename it. Purified Pokémon cannot enter Hyper Mode and can be transferred to Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, or LeafGreen versions if you have the necessary cables.
