Walkthrough
  1. 1
New Bark Town: After speaking with Professor Elm, his aide will give you five Poké Balls as you attempt to leave town.
  2. 2
Route 29: An NPC offers a tutorial on catching Pokémon. You can optionally visit Route 46 from here for different wild Pokémon. Head north to Cherrygrove City, then north again to Route 30.
  3. 3
Route 30: Go north through the grass to the paved path. Head west and north to find two trainers battling. Continue north along the route until you reach Route 31.
  4. 4
Route 31: Head east into the grass, then turn north to find the entrance to Dark Cave.
  5. 5
Dark Cave: Navigate the cave to find a Potion. The path is: north twice, east, north, west, north, east, north, east, south, west, south. Exit the cave.
  6. 6
Route 31 (Continued): Back outside, find an Antidote to the west. South and west of there, follow the pond's shore to find a Bitter Berry. Go southeast and past the ledge to get a Poké Ball. Battle the trainer to the southwest. Head west and northwest through the grass to reach the gatehouse for Violet City.
Tips
  • Recommended Levels: Level 7+
  • Wild Pokémon: Route 29 has Pidgey, Hoothoot, Sentret, Rattata. Route 46 has Geodude, Jigglypuff, Spearow. Route 30 has Pidgey, Caterpie/Metapod (day), Spinarak (night). Route 31 has Bellsprout. Dark Cave has Zubat and a 1% chance for Dunsparce.
  • Trainer Battles: Be prepared to battle Youngster Joey (Rattata Lv. 4), Youngster Mikey (Pidgey Lv. 4, Rattata Lv. 4), Bug Catcher Don (Caterpie Lv. 3, Caterpie Lv. 3), and Bug Catcher Wade (Caterpie Lv. 2, Caterpie Lv. 2, Weedle Lv. 3, Caterpie Lv. 2).
  • Pokémon Evaluations: Pidgey is useful early for its Flying type. Caterpie evolves into Butterfree, good for status moves. Spinarak evolves into Ariados, a decent Bug Pokémon. Bellsprout can help with Fire, Ground, and Rock weaknesses if your starter is Cyndaquil. Dunsparce is rare and has decent move flexibility.
  • Zephyr Badge (from the Violet City Gym, not covered in this section)
  • Items: Poké Balls, Potion, Antidote, Bitter Berry
