Navigate Mordor effectively in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Utilize climbing, Wraith Form, and attraction to conquer treacherous terrain and Uruks.
Mastering movement in Mordor is key to survival. Utilize sprinting to climb walls and vault over obstacles. Ledges offer strategic advantages for stealth takedowns and can be used to avoid fall damage by entering Wraith Form. Learn to attract Uruks with wraith energy for controlled engagements.
Movement and Traversal
Navigating the treacherous terrain of Mordor is made easier with Talion's agile abilities. Sprinting into a wall will allow you to climb over it, while sprinting over an obstacle enables a vault. Approaching a ledge with a sprint will result in either a jump down or a transition to an adjacent ledge. While clinging to a ledge, pressing Circle will drop you down one level, and holding Circle will cause you to fall to the ground. Importantly, Talion automatically enters Wraith Form when falling, negating any fall damage.
Ledges are a powerful tool for dispatching Uruks. Performing an Aerial Takedown by dropping onto an unsuspecting Uruk from a ledge results in a stealth finisher. Uruks rarely look up, making this a reliable tactic. You can also shimmy along ledges by holding onto them. If an Uruk gets too close, you can perform a Ledge Kill by pressing R2 + Square, the same input for Ground Executions. If an Uruk is out of reach for a Ledge Kill, you can Attract them by using a blast of wraith energy (R2 + Triangle). Once they approach, you can dispatch them. This attraction ability can also be used on the ground, and by entering Ranged Mode and pressing Triangle, you can even lure Uruks to specific locations.
Wraith Abilities: Focus, Elf-Shot, and Draining
While Talion doesn't carry a traditional bow, the spectral presence of the wraith grants him ranged capabilities. Your primary ranged resource is Elf-Shot, which is replenished by draining Uruks. Simply hold down Circle while near an Uruk to drain them and regain Elf-Shot. As you progress, you'll unlock abilities that allow for faster and more versatile draining, ensuring a steady supply. Focus, which slows down time for more accurate aiming, regenerates automatically over time. While it takes a few seconds to recharge, it's a reliable resource that doesn't require active replenishment.
Progression: XP, Power, and Mirian
Talion's growth in Mordor is driven by three key currencies: XP, Power, and Mirian.
- XP (Experience Points): Earned by killing Uruks and completing missions. Leveling up grants Ability Points, which are used to unlock new skills.
- Power: Unlocks higher Ability Tiers. Power is gained by resolving Power Struggles and by killing Uruks, with the amount of Power earned equaling the slain Uruk's Power Rating.
- Mirian: Used to upgrade your weapons and improve core attributes like Health, Focus, and Elf-Shot capacity. Once all runes on a weapon are unlocked with Mirian, you can purchase a powerful, temporary ability for each weapon type: infinite Executions for swords, infinite Elf-Shot and Focus for bows, and infinite Stealth Finishers for daggers. Mirian is acquired through completing side missions, challenges, finding collectibles, and destroying runes from elite Uruks.
