Learn how to become a squad leader in Battlefield 1, understand attack/defend orders, and master the general and class progression systems for unlocking weapons and gadgets.

Becoming a Squad Leader:

  1. Create a New Squad: Open the squad menu (Square/X) from the respawn screen, select 'Leave Squad' then 'Create Squad'. Set it to 'public' for others to join.
  2. Request Order (Hardline Feature): Hold R1/RB to open the commo-rose and select 'Request Order'. If the current leader gives no orders for 60 seconds, you'll be promoted.
  3. Direct Request (Voice Chat): If using a mic, ask the current squad leader to promote you via the squad menu ('Manage Squad' > select you > 'Promote Player').

Issuing Orders:

  • Attack Order: Placed on a neutral or enemy-controlled objective. Completed when your team captures it.
  • Defend Order: Placed on a friendly objective. Completed if your team retains control for one minute.

Orders grant an XP bonus upon completion and can be completed regardless of squad presence or proximity. Be proactive in monitoring objectives and issuing appropriate orders.

General Progression:

  • BF1 uses an XP-based system for levelling. You start at Rank 0 and progress through numbered ranks by accumulating XP.
  • Your progress is shown on the Soldier tab (main menu) and Personal tab (end-of-round screen), including an estimated time to the next rank based on your Score Per Minute (SPM).
  • The original level cap was Rank 100, requiring 20 million XP.

Warbonds:

  • Warbonds are a currency earned by levelling up your general multiplayer rank, used to unlock weapons and gadgets.
  • You earn 90 warbonds per rank-up from Rank 2 to Rank 70.
  • To earn 450 warbonds for the 'Warbonds' trophy/achievement, you need to reach Rank 6 (55,000 XP total).
  • Primary weapons typically cost 200 warbonds, sidearms 150, and gadgets/grenades 60. Some items are also locked behind class ranks.
  • You stop earning warbonds after Rank 70, as you'll have enough for all base game unlocks. DLC unlocks are via assignments.

Corporal Trophy/Achievement:

  • Requires reaching Rank 10 in multiplayer.
  • This needs a total of 145,000 XP (55,000 for Rank 6 + 90,000 more).

Class Progression:

  • There are four standard infantry classes: Medic, Assault, Support, and Scout.
  • Additional classes include Tanker, Pilot, Cavalry, and Elite classes.
  • Each class has its own rank, separate from the overall multiplayer rank.
  • XP is earned for a class by playing with it. Your class can be overridden if you spawn directly into a vehicle or as a special class (Tanker, Pilot, Cavalry).
