How to Unlock The Tannery

First off, you'll need to reach level ten. Once you hit that milestone, head over to the survival sub-category in your knowledge tab. You'll see an option to buy the Tanner – grab that with your points. After you've unlocked the recipe, you can build the Tannery at your base using a Construction Hammer. It's not too resource-intensive, thankfully! You'll need 100 Wood, 200 Stone, and 50 Bark. You can find trees and rocks pretty much anywhere, so gathering those should be a breeze. If you're struggling to get bark, just give a tree a whack with your pickaxe. Once your Tannery is built and placed, you'll need Bark or the Flesh of Krllyand to get it running and start crafting.

What Can You Craft With The Tannery?

The main gig of the Tannery is crafting Leather and Tar. You can make two types of Leather: standard Leather from regular Hide, furs, pelts, and the heads of weaker creatures, and Thick Leather from tougher stuff like Thick Hide, Elephant Hide, Rhino Hide, Bear Pelt, and the heads of more formidable foes like dragons. Just pop the right material into the station, and it'll show you which Leather type it's currently set to produce.

Why is Leather so important? Well, it's used in a ton of gear, from armor to healing wraps, so you'll definitely want to keep a good stock of it. Plus, here's a little secret: for every piece of Leather you craft, you also get one piece of Tar. And Tar? That's super important for making Steelfire, which you then use to craft Steel Bars. You can also use Tar in recipes for dyes, armor, and warpaint. Seriously, keep a good stash of Tar going because you'll be using it constantly for Steel Bars.
