Shaleback Pet Locations and Uses

Discover where to find Shaleback Hatchlings in Conan Exiles on the Exiled Lands and Isle of Siptah. Learn about their stats, variants, and how to tame them for your base.

Shalebacks are common early-game pets in Conan Exiles, found near water. To obtain one, you need a Shaleback Hatchling, which can be found wandering near adult Shalebacks or obtained from eggs. Adult Shalebacks are hostile, so approach with caution. Vendors may also sell eggs, but they are readily available in the wild.

Once you have a Hatchling, place it in an Animal Pen and feed it to tame it. The food provided influences the Shaleback variant you receive. Variant A is the most common (48% chance with any food). For specific variants, use Shadespiced Succulent Shellfish for a chance at C or D, or the Greater Shaleback. Use Shadespiced Highland Berries for a chance at Variant B, C, or D.

The Savage Frontier Pack DLC offers additional variants (E, F, G, H) using Totemic Fodder.

All Shaleback pets have 10 inventory slots. Variants A-D have one point in Agility and Vitality. The Greater Shaleback has better base stats, with points in Strength, Vitality, and Grit, plus a 5% agility and 5% strength damage bonus. Stats increase as the pet levels up to 20 by following you and participating in combat. Feeding them food like Plant Fiber can also provide stat boosts, though stat growth is RNG-dependent.

Shaleback Hatchling Locations

Exiled Lands

Shaleback Hatchlings are found along the shores of Section Three and Section Four of the Exiled Lands map. Look for nests and hatchlings crawling around. Remember that adult Shalebacks are hostile.

Isle of Siptah

On the Isle of Siptah, Shalebacks and Hatchlings are primarily found in Section 6H, on the southern islands. Be prepared for other larger enemies in the area.
