Learn how to save, restore HP/MP, check shop inventories, and manage day/night cycles in Dragon Quest IV.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Churches & Chapels: Save your progress by talking to the priest and selecting "Confession." This is free. Priests can also resurrect fallen party members and remove CURSE and POISON ailments for a small gold coin fee. They can also tell you your experience points needed to level up.
  2. 2
Taverns/Inns: Sleep at taverns or inns to restore all health and magic points for your party. There is a small fee, but it is usually worth it. Never leave a town without sleeping at the inn first. This does NOT remove status ailments.
  3. 3
Town Shops: Browse inventories of all shops in a town by pressing the Y button while walking around. You can see the cost of wares without visiting individual stores. Buy new equipment often and always carry healing items when entering a dungeon.
  4. 4
Directions: Understand north, south, west, and east. Reset the camera view by holding L and R simultaneously before following directions to avoid walking the wrong way.
  5. 5
Day & Night: The game has an in-game day/night cycle. Enemies are often different and stronger at night. Some events only trigger during the day, while others only at night. Most main storyline events trigger during the day. If an NPC (non-player character — anyone the game controls, not you) won't talk, check if it's night. The "Night Light" item, obtained in Chapter IV, allows quicker cycling between night and day.
  6. 6
Shining Spots on the Ground: Step on shining spots and press A to find items. These are listed in the main walkthrough.
  7. 7
Mini Medals: Find these secret items by breaking barrels, opening drawers, or examining shining spots. Exchange them for great equipment at the castle in the northeastern end of the world map once you get Torneko's ship during Chapter V.
Tips
  • Always save at churches or chapels before taking a break.
  • Prioritize sleeping at inns before leaving a town to ensure your party is fully healed.
  • Frequently check shop inventories and purchase new equipment for your characters.
  • Keep a good stock of healing items for dungeon excursions.
  • Pay attention to the day/night cycle, as it affects enemy encounters and event triggers.
  • Collect Mini Medals whenever you find them, as they offer valuable equipment rewards.
