Learn to identify and counter every enemy type in Far Cry 3, from basic soldiers to fearsome predators. Master the icons above their heads to survive the Rakyat's island.

Alright, so you're gonna run into all sorts of trouble on the Rook Islands, and knowing who you're up against is half the battle. The game does a pretty good job of letting you know what kind of threat you're facing. Keep an eye on the icons that pop up above their heads when you aim at them – it's your best bet for figuring out what you're dealing with, whether it's a human or one of the island's less-than-friendly animals.

You can use your camera to tag enemies and find out what type they are. Make sure you watch out for Heavies (right), as they can take a lot of damage before going down.

• Normal — These are your standard bad guys. They'll shoot at you with guns and are marked with a simple skull symbol. Nothing too fancy, just aim for the head and take 'em down.
• Sniper/RPG — See that crosshair symbol? That means they're probably perched up somewhere far off, ready to blast you with a sniper rifle or an RPG. These guys are a top priority – take them out ASAP before they ruin your day from a distance.
• Charger — If you see a lightning bolt symbol, get ready to move! These are the melee types who will charge straight at you. Some of them might even have shotguns, so be prepared to dodge or find cover quickly.
• Heavy — These guys are tough. They're usually decked out in armor, often wielding an LMG, and they can soak up a ton of damage. The icon for them is a shield. Sometimes they'll even bring a flamethrower to the party, so keep your distance and aim for weak spots if you can find them.
• Predator — When you see a set of fangs, it's not a human enemy – it's an animal looking to make you its next meal. Tigers, bears, and leopards are the usual suspects here. They'll come after you, so be ready to fight back or run.
• Herbivore — Marked with a paw print, these are generally the chill animals on the island. They're usually harmless and might even just run away if you get too close. No need to worry too much about these guys.
