Ready to dive into Hydrocity Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 3? This guide breaks down Act 1, from tricky bubbles to the Whirlpool Machine mini-boss. Let's go!

Alright, after the fiery start of Angel Island, we're heading into Hydrocity Zone! This place cranks up the difficulty a bit and feels a lot like Labyrinth Zone from the first game, but with some cool new twists. Get ready for conveyor belts, fans, catapults, and spinning pillars. Let's get through this!

Walkthrough
  1. 1
When you first land, just head right and hit that switch to get things rolling. Then, you'll need to go through the passageway – just press any of the action buttons ([A], [B], or [C]) to let go of the bars. Drop down after that.
  2. 2
Keep heading right. You'll notice these bubbles floating around. Make sure to inhale them whenever you see them, especially when you're underwater, otherwise, you'll start to drown and lose a life! Grab the Water Shield you'll find in the passageway at the end; it's super helpful here.
  3. 3
Take out any Badniks you encounter. If you've got that Water Shield, you're golden – you won't be bothered by their attacks, and you definitely won't drown underwater. Go through the next passageway and let go of those poles. Hold [Right] on the D-Pad, and you'll arrive at a Starpost.
  4. 4
Run through the loop-de-loop. The second time you go through it, head left. Now, run across the water and keep holding [Right] until you pop out near a Turbo Spiker.
  5. 5
Go through another loop-de-loop, then head right. Drop down and keep going right until you find another switch. Hit it to activate the air fans. You'll need to climb up the conveyor belts and then jump up using the spring.
  6. 6
Head left from there and jump into the Giant Ring. Once you return, go up the slope and pass the Starpost. You'll need to Spin Dash through the tunnel ahead to face the Mini-Boss.

Mini-Boss Battle: Whirlpool Machine

This guy takes about 6 hits to defeat. Keep an eye on the water currents and try to hit it whenever you get a clear shot!

Tips
  • Don't forget to grab the Water Shield early on! It makes the underwater sections much easier and protects you from enemy projectiles.
  • Inhaling bubbles is crucial to avoid drowning, especially if you don't have the Water Shield. Keep an eye out for them!
  • The Spin Dash is your best friend for breaking through the tunnel to reach the mini-boss.
