Learn how to save your progress in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, including managing save slots, character selection, and auto-save mechanics for uninterrupted gameplay.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles features a save system for both 1-Player and 2-Player/Competition modes. The game automatically records your Best Times in each zone, which are updated simultaneously for both Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles when playing in 2-Player mode.

In 1-Player mode, the Data Select screen offers eight save slots, initially marked as "NEW". To start a new game, select a slot and choose your character: Sonic & Tails, Sonic Alone, Tails Alone, or Knuckles Alone. Once chosen, a character image will appear on the save file, and you can only use that character for that save. After starting a game or clearing a zone, the save file will display an image of the current zone. The game also saves your lives, continues, and emeralds (Chaos or Super Emeralds). To delete a file, select the "Robotnik" slot (far right) and move the cursor to the file you wish to erase. A "NO SAVE" slot is available if you prefer to play without recording data.

If you have existing Sonic 3 save files when accessing the Sonic 3 & Knuckles Data Select screen, they will be copied to corresponding blank slots. You can resume your Sonic 3 progress, starting Sonic 3 & Knuckles from where you left off, including any collected emeralds.

Saving is automatic (auto-save) and occurs when you clear a Zone, finish a Special Stage, or are in the Emerald Chamber. No on-screen notification appears during auto-saves, which typically take 10-15 seconds. To prevent data loss, it's recommended to wait about 20 seconds before resetting or powering off the console after saving.

Completed save files are marked with "CLEAR". Selecting a completed file allows you to cycle through zone images and choose a starting level. If no level is selected, a character image will be displayed based on your progress and collected emeralds:

• Sonic Alone or Sonic & Tails: Regular Sonic (0-6 Chaos Emeralds), Super Sonic (7 Chaos Emeralds), Hyper Sonic (7 Super Emeralds).
• Knuckles: Regular Knuckles (0-6 Chaos Emeralds), Super Knuckles (7 Chaos Emeralds), Hyper Knuckles (7 Super Emeralds).
• Tails: Regular Tails (0-7 Chaos Emeralds), Super Tails (7 Super Emeralds).
• All Characters: A combined image of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles appears after collecting all 7 Chaos/Super Emeralds and completing the game again.
