Learn about the main biomes in Terraria, including mini-biomes, micro-biomes, and structures. Understand the different layers of the world: Space, Surface, Underground, Cavern, and Underworld.

This guide provides a simplified overview of Terraria's biomes, focusing on the main environmental biomes and important smaller biomes within them. For detailed information on items, drops, and monsters within specific biomes, refer to the advanced biomes section.

Additionally, there are smaller biomes that have unique categories:

  • Mini-biomes: These biomes contain unique enemies, blocks, and rewards. They are larger than micro-biomes but smaller than environmental biomes like the Snow or Desert.
  • Micro-biomes: Even smaller than mini-biomes, these do not contain enemies but often feature special items and blocks.
  • Structures: Technically referred to as "Treasure Rooms," these are catch-all terms for structures containing chests and useful items with no enemies. They are often very small.

Exploration Note: Keep Gel, obtained from killing Slimes, readily available. Gel is essential for crafting torches and Sticky Bombs/Dynamite for environmental destruction. It can also be used to create Sticky Glowstocks, which are helpful as regular Glowsticks can roll away when thrown.

Each major biome type has unique chests containing area-specific items. The world is layered, and understanding these layers is important:

  • Space Layer: Generally irrelevant, except for an achievement.
  • Surface Layer: The area you walk on and a small section beneath. The upper part of this layer contains Sky Islands.
  • Underground Layer: Where early-game ores (T1, occasionally T2) are found.
  • Cavern Layer: A significant layer where T3 and T4 ores and the underground sections of major biomes are located.
  • Underworld Layer: Houses the Underworld biome, characterized by lava and Hellstone ore.

Note on Underground & Cavern Layers: These layers exist for all biome types. For non-Forest biomes, the Underground and Cavern layers share the same enemies and items (e.g., "Underground Snow"). The Forest biome is unique, with different items and enemies in its Underground layer compared to its Cavern layer.
