The Corruption and Crimson can spread into the desert, creating a Corrupted or Crimsoned Desert.

The Hallow can also spawn near or within the desert, turning it into a Hallowed Desert.

The Corrupted Desert is inhabited by Dark Mummies and Shadow Mummies.

Dark Mummies and Shadow Mummies drop Dark Shards, which are used to craft a powerful ranged weapon, and accessories that offer resistance to status effects.
