Explore The Forest's Ledge Cave for the Climbing Axe and Old Photo 1, and prepare for the Sinkhole and Waterfall Cave.

    Continue through the cave, collecting snacks and an air canister from the third water pool.

    Locate a large cave with a climbing wall on your left. Descend carefully, avoiding the cannibals and babies at the bottom by clambering onto the rocks to the right and using explosives or molotovs.

    Drop down by hugging the rock wall to reach a lit generator. The light points to the CLIMBING AXE embedded in the wall; grab it. Also, find the 'GREAT SAVINGS' CHAINSAW ADVERT on the floor.

    Find a rope against the south wall in the generator area. Ascend it to find OLD PHOTO 1 and Old Gun ammo, then climb two more ropes to bypass the blockage from the Dead Cave.

    Return to the generator area in the Ledge Cave and go north-west into a huge, noisy cave. Go right to find Passenger 8B (29/43) dangling over a gap.

    Drop into the gap with the lit generator to find the 'OPENING THE ARTIFACT' VIDEO TAPE. Climb down the rope or jump into the water to collect items on the other side, including a set of clothes.

    Climb the rope on the other side and return to the gap you fell into. This time, jump over it to find Passenger 9A (30/43) hanging from the ceiling. Be aware of potential cannibals and babies.

    Continue to a rope leading up to a gap (or scale the rocks to the side). Squeeze through the gap to reach the ledge that gives the cave its name.

    This ledge serves as a shortcut to near the end of the game and can provide maximum Bone Armour for free.

    Collect supplies and OLD PHOTO 2 on the ledge. Go through the gap on the other side to find a tent lit by generators.

    Climb the rope behind the tent (or scale the rocks) and pass through a water tunnel. If you lack the Rebreather, hug the surface to the left of the generator in the water to squeeze through.

    At the bottom of the next rope, you will find a campfire. Climb several more ropes to emerge at Entrance 2 (W).

OBJECTIVE: FIND A WAY INTO THE SINKHOLE

If the game has not yet given you this objective, go south-east from the Ledge Cave's Entrance 2 (W) to get a good view of the Sinkhole.

POINT OF INTEREST: Sinkhole Preparation

You can prepare for the Sinkhole by chopping down trees around its lip and dropping the logs into the Sinkhole. These logs will persist, allowing you to build structures like Hunting Shelters or Deadfall Traps once you are down there. It is recommended to save logs for Wood Benches and Hunting Shelters.

POINT OF INTEREST: Sinkhole Access via Ledge

From the north-west edge of the Sinkhole lip, you can step onto a mossy ledge and, with luck, drop to the overlook ledge normally accessed via the Ledge Cave, allowing entry into the Sinkhole.

POINT OF INTEREST: Sinkhole Access via Dead Cave Ledge

Around the Sinkhole lip at the 5 o'clock position, a waterfall feeds a pool. By climbing the edge to the left/west of this spot, you can drop onto the roof of the Dead Cave's ledge overlook, then onto the ledge itself. This provides access to the Dead Cave and the Sinkhole shortcut. However, this is difficult to judge and not recommended as Entrance 1 (W) to the Dead Cave is easier to access.

POINT OF INTEREST: Tents near Ledge Cave Entrance 2 (W)

West of the Ledge Cave's Entrance 2 (W), you can find several orange tents near three cannibal huts. These tents offer save points, making a separate camp unnecessary.

The Waterfall Cave is located next to the three cannibal huts mentioned previously.

Entrances

  • Entrance 1 (N): Beside three cannibal huts and five orange tents, due west of the map's center.
  • Entrance 2 (S): At the north end of the geese pond, to the south-south-west.

The Waterfall Cave also provides access to the Lawyers Cave if you have the Rebreather.

Preparation

There are tents available at Entrance 1 (N) and within the first part of the cave, so building a base beforehand is not necessary. Consider creating and wearing Stealth Armour to avoid the 'cowman' (a type of enemy).
