Navigate your Unpacking journey with our Career Progression Items guide. Learn how to unpack, place items, and unlock achievements as you progress through the game's story.

Hey there! So, you're diving into Unpacking and want to know about how things progress and what cool items you'll encounter? This guide is here to help you through it all, like a friend showing you the ropes. We'll cover how to get through each stage, what to look out for, and how to snag those achievements along the way.

The game is all about the simple joy of unpacking boxes after a move, and it follows a person's life story through different stages, marked by years. You'll be clicking on boxes to open them, then picking up items and placing them. Don't stress too much about where things go initially – there's an accessibility option that lets you place items anywhere, which is super handy if you just want to get through it all quickly or if you're aiming for those achievements without worrying about perfect placement. Aesthetics don't matter here, so feel free to make a glorious mess if you need to!

You can rotate items using the B button, and some items need a press of the B button to interact with them, like solving a puzzle or making a mannequin do a little dance. If you're ever running out of space, you can use the LB or RB buttons to move between rooms. Most rooms are also a bit taller than what's on screen, so don't forget to scroll up or down to find more space.

Quick Tip: Those clothes hangers can take up a lot of space later on. Try to hang them up in wardrobes to keep things tidy and out of the way.

Unpacking - Story Walkthrough

Before you start, it's a good idea to turn on the accessibility option. Just go to Settings > Accessibility and select "Allow items anywhere." This won't affect any achievements, so it's all good!

When you start, you'll pick a save slot by pressing A on the top book and entering your name.

1997

In this first level, you'll start by clicking on the two boxes available. With the "Allow items anywhere" option on, just place the items wherever you like. Click on a box to open it, then click on an item to pick it up. Move it to where you want it and click again to place it. Once a box is empty, click it one more time to make it disappear.

You'll find a Rubik's Cube in one of the boxes. While holding it, keep pressing the B button. You'll see the colors change, and if you stop pressing B when all sides are the same color, you'll solve it and unlock the 'Solve a puzzle' achievement.

Keep unpacking. There's a third box to open once you've emptied the first two. Inside, you'll find an old Polaroid camera. Placing this camera down will unlock the 'Make some memories' achievement.

Once all three boxes are empty, a star will appear in the bottom-right corner. Click on it to finish the 1997 level and unlock the 'Beginning' achievement.

2004

This level has three rooms, and you can switch between them using the LB and RB buttons. Head to the bathroom first. You'll need to flush seven toilets across the game for an achievement. In the bathroom, click the handle on the cistern to flush the toilet – that's 'Gotta flush 'em all 1/7'.

Now, back to the bedroom to unpack. Look out for a wooden artist's mannequin. Before you place it, press the B button repeatedly while holding it until it does a 'dab' dance. This will unlock the 'Strike a pose' achievement!
