Learn the Dragon Quest VIII Alchemy system! Discover how to combine items, upgrade your gear, and find recipes to craft powerful new equipment.
Brand new to the Dragon Quest series is the Alchemy System in which you, the player, can combine Two to Three items in an Alchemy Pot and after a couple of seconds, a new item appears. All crafting recipes contains at least one Primary Ingredient (example: Weapon, Body, Shield, Helmet) and the rest are materials. When crafting, your Primary Ingredient can either go Horizontal (example: A Sword turning into a Shield), or Vertical positively/negatively (example: The Sword will either become a better or worse weapon). On that note, always double check what you are crafting before you actually craft it.
Alchemy becomes available once you arrive in Pereguin Quay. King Trode will give you a brief lesson on the how Alchemy works before setting us free. Now first off, there are two Tiers of Alchemy Pots. Right now you have the Tier 1 Pot which only allows you to combine Two Ingredients to craft something. I believe once you get the ship is when you unlock the Tier 2 Pot which allows you to combine up to Three Ingredients to craft something.
As stated above, crafting in this game is fairly simple. You only need two to three ingredients to craft and you only need one of each (Note: Strong Medicine requires two Ingredients being Medicinal Herb and Medicinal Herb. Even though you are using Two Medicinal Herbs, they still fill up two Ingredient Slots). Another thing that makes this Alchemy System great is that you did not have to find the recipe first in order to craft the item. Once again, as long as you have the items, you can craft the item. No restrictions. That being said, if you don't have a guide, then you can find Recipes by searching Bookshelves throughout the world.
One more thing that makes this Alchemy System great is that it really allows you to make use of old equipment that you aren't using anymore. You could easily craft an old piece of equipment into something new and more powerful, thus reducing the need to purchase new equipment at the shop. I highly recommend only investing gold in equipment that can be used for crafting. The following section includes a complete list of all possible Ingredients in the game, by Type.
The other sub sections are the actual recipes, by Equipment/Item type, in ascending value.
