Dragon Quest VIII offers six playable characters, including two bonus characters exclusive to this version. Unlike previous Dragon Quest titles that used a class change system, each character in Dragon Quest VIII has their own unique character builds. As a character levels up, they earn Skill Points, accumulating a total of 350 Skill Points by Level 99. These Skill Points can be allocated to any of the character's four Skill Trees either immediately upon leveling up or saved for later use.

Each character possesses four Skill Trees: two are weapon-specific, one is for Fisticuffs (unarmed combat), and the fourth is unique to that character. Each tree requires 100 Skill Points to max out, allowing characters to potentially max out 3.5 Skill Trees. Additional Skill Points can be obtained by using Seeds of Skill, which are found in treasure chests, as rewards, from enemy drops, and from blue or purple chests.

Within each Skill Tree, there are milestones. Investing a certain amount of Skill Points into a tree unlocks a spell, ability, or stat boost. The allocation of Skill Points is permanent, so it is highly recommended to research each character's available skills before making decisions to avoid negatively impacting their build.

Note that there is a Skill Point Cap based on a character's level, which may restrict how many points you can initially invest in a tree. Furthermore, most abilities and traits are tied to the weapon they are associated with; equipping a different weapon may disable those abilities and boosts.

Tips

Only allocate Skill Points when you have enough to reach the next milestone. There is no benefit to stopping between milestones.
If you find yourself with excess Skill Points after maxing out primary weapon trees and a character's unique tree, consider holding onto them. You might need them later to allocate to a different tree to overcome a specific boss or farm enemies.
