The Retro Lancer is a weapon in Gears of War 3 that harkens back to older COG equipment. It features a bayonet attachment in place of a chainsaw. This weapon boasts significant power, exceeding even the Hammerburst. An active reload (a timing-based mechanic to increase weapon effectiveness) with the Retro Lancer can down enemies extremely quickly, making it an effective counter against players who rush with shotguns.

However, the Retro Lancer's power comes with drawbacks. It has considerable kickback (the recoil that pushes your aim away), requiring constant readjustment and favoring short bursts of fire. You also lose the quick, one-hit kill melee attack, replaced by the bayonet charge.

If you are at a sufficient distance from an enemy, holding the (B) button will initiate a bayonet charge. If this charge connects, it results in an instant kill, but it can be difficult to aim accurately.
