Learn how to complete all Rampages in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. This guide covers scoring, chaining, Henchmen, and exploit locations for easy medals.
As you go about the city you may find skull icons in various places. These are the Rampage Icons. Just like with the Rampages in the previous GTA games you will be given a time limit, 90 seconds, and with a specific weapon with unlimited ammo to kill criminals and destroy their cars.
You can also use thrown weapons in addition to your main weapon. However, it is not unlimited - the more you have going in, the better. In addition, when you use one during a Rampage it will not deplete from your stash. For example, you have 50 Molotovs when you start a Rampage and use ten during it. When you finish you will still have 50 when you go back to normal.
One of the differences here is that you score points to gain Medals instead of just killing a specific number of people. The good news is that you don't gain any attributes for obtaining Gold on any of the Rampages so you can just go for Bronze and be done with it.
Another difference from previous Rampages is that on most of them you are given an indestructible helper, called a Henchman, that will kill on your behalf. The maximum number you can have is two. When you get into a car then your Henchmen will also come with you.
Another difference is that on previous Rampages it was just you, the gangs, and sometimes the Ambulance personnel. On "Chinatown Wars" though you will now have to contend with the Cops.
On virtually all of the Rampages you will have to deal with them at some point. Thankfully the game maxes out the Wanted Rating at 1-Star. But they can still be annoying. In addition, any Wanted Rating you have when you start a Rampage will disappear.
When you start a Rampage then you will be given full Health and Body Armor regardless of what you had going into it. This is only for the Rampage. Whatever Health and Body Armor you had when you started is what you will have when it ends regardless of how much you have upon completion. Health and Body Armor will generate when you start to run low.
All of the upgrades you have earned up to this point will be very useful in the Rampages as they will make them much easier to survive.
Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable Differences
There are a total of thirty Rampages in the Nintendo DS Version and thirty five in the PSP Version with five of those being exclusive to that version. Another difference between the two platforms is that the PSP Version doesn't generate as many targets as the NDS one. This will make getting Gold in some Rampages harder.
One final difference is that on the PSP Version on some of the Rampages the Medal requirements are lower. Those are listed below the NDS scores.
The gangs you encounter in the Rampages will be the nine that were mentioned in the Dealing chapter plus one that you will encounter later in the Main Story - the Jaoming Family.
As for scoring, you get fifteen points when you kill someone, three points if you run them over with a car, and two points for destroying a gang car. When someone is killed by a Henchman you will get three points. You get no points for killing a Cop or destroying his vehicle.
The key to getting points for medals is Chaining. When you or your Henchmen kill someone or destroy a gang car immediately after killing a person then you will get a 2x Chain.
If you continue to kill more people quickly then you can increase the length of the chain. Killing a Cop, destroying his vehicle, or destroying a non-gang car will NOT count towards the chain. If you stop killing for about three to five seconds then the chain ends.
Whatever the amount of points you get while you are creating the chain will be multiplied by the final chain length when it ends. At least that is how I think it works.
The general strategy on Rampages is just going down the streets killing gang members and creating Chains to get good enough scores to successfully complete the Rampage with at least a Bronze. The Rampages are not hard to get a Bronze Medal in so they shouldn't take too long to go through, especially with all of the upgrades that have been acquired up to this point. Getting Gold, on the other hand, can be extremely difficult on some Rampages.
However, I have found an exploit that can be useful on most of the Rampages. There are three areas that spawn massive amounts of gang members and in straight lines. If you run them over quickly you can create massively long Chains that can get you the Gold even though you are getting three points per roadkill (with some exceptions).
The Golden Pier (The Meat Quarter - Algonquin)
The bad news is that the gang members only spawn on the large piers in the back. But, with good driving, you can get 20x plus Chains consistently. Better driving can get you much longer Chains. Start from either the north or south ends of the pier area and make your way to the other end. Then turn around and go back the same way you came.
When you enter the car then let your Henchmen come with you. They can keep Chains going when you turn corners as this is where you will usually break them.
Charge Island
Get to the four-way intersection at the north end of the island. Head east on the sidewalk on the south side of the street to start running them over. Follow the sidewalk and cross the street going south to get onto the sidewalk for the sewer plant.
Continue south while running them over. A good decent speed works good for this part. It will help you keep control of the vehicle because there are a couple of blue trash bins that you can hit that can cause you to smack into the end of the chain-link fence past them.
