Complete the Riding Shotgun side-mission in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. Drive a pickup truck with a Henchman and destroy gang cars for points.

There are several special vehicles parked throughout Liberty City that, when you enter them, will start the Riding Shotgun side-mission, a variant of the Rampage (a timed challenge to destroy enemies).

You will be driving a pickup truck with a Henchman (a non-player character) in the back who will shoot at gang cars. You will also be given 500 rounds of Micro-SMG ammo regardless of what you had going in, and two minutes to successfully complete the side-mission.

In addition to the regular gang cars, you will also be prompted to go after gang captains. Gang captains are worth 100 points, while regular gang cars are worth twenty-five points. The gang captains appear as red dots on your minimap (a small map usually in the corner of the screen) and will only appear one at a time.

The basic strategy is to ignore the regular gang cars and go after the captains exclusively. Get up alongside a captain and use a quick burst from your Micro-SMG to quickly destroy him so you can get another to appear. Let your Henchman go after any vehicle that happens to be nearby.

Warning: Be careful not to get too close to car explosions or you will damage your vehicle. If your vehicle is destroyed, you will end up with a mission failure and probably Wasted (die) if you are still inside.

If you successfully obtain a Medal, you will also get a cash bonus. The Medal requirements for all five of the Riding Shotgun side-missions, with cash bonus, are as follows:

  • Bronze - 400 points (80$).
  • Silver - 750 points (150$).
  • Gold - 1,250 points (250$).

You can get Bronze quite easily, but acquiring Gold may take a few tries if you want it, as there are no special rewards for getting Gold. The pickup trucks you use are slow and have slow acceleration. Your Henchman's weapon also plays a role. The gang captains will spawn behind you about eighty percent of the time, which will make you stop and turn around. Some gang cars are faster than others, which makes things worse.

Listed below are the five Riding Shotgun side-missions. The information on each of them is broken down as follows:

  • Vehicle: The pickup truck that you use.
  • Henchman Weapon: The weapon your Henchman uses.
  • Gang: The gang that you will encounter.
  • Map: The co-ordinates on the printed map that comes included with the game card.
  • Directions: How to get to the Riding Shotgun vehicle.
  • Notes: Information on the side-mission.

Purgatory (Algonquin)

  • Vehicle: Calvacade FXT.
  • Henchman Weapon: Micro-SMG.
  • Gang: Russian Mafia.
  • Map: (B-3).
  • Directions: Inside an industrial facility 85 feet northeast of MC Krazy [PGY-D21].
  • Notes: Not too hard to get Gold in. The nearby main road makes it easy to quickly turn around when necessary.

Castle Garden City (Algonquin)

  • Vehicle: Calvacade FXT.
  • Henchman Weapon: Shotgun.
  • Gang: Irish American Killers.
  • Map: (B-4).
  • Directions: Go to the four-way intersection with the main road at the southwest corner of the Suffolk Gas Station. From here, head south and turn left with the road curve. Head east and, as you near the next intersection, you should see some billboards to your left. Just north of them on the north side of the road is a small parking area where you should find the Calvacade FXT.
  • Notes: A little harder to get Gold in. Your Henchman has a short range Shotgun so he will not be able to get as many points as you would like. However, the nearby main road makes it easy to quickly turn around when necessary so that eases chasing around the gang captains.

Industrial (Bohan)

  • Vehicle: Bobcat.
  • Henchman Weapon: Micro-SMG.
  • Gang: The Mob.
  • Map: (D-2).
  • Directions: From the four-way intersection next to the Chase Point Pay 'N' Spray, head north then turn right at the three-way intersection then turn left at the next four-way intersection. When you get to the next double intersection then stop. Near the southeast corner of this intersection is a parking area. The Bobcat can be found next to a pair of container crates.
  • Notes: This is probably the hardest to get Gold in. The Bobcat is a worse vehicle (meaning: slower) than the Calvacade FXT and the gang cars used, Cognoscenti and Turismo, are pretty fast. As already mentioned, the gang captains spawn behind you most of the time plus the short narrow streets make it difficult to catch up to them. If you get Gold it will take a few tries.
