Learn how to upgrade your No Man's Sky Freighter's storage slots using Cargo Bulkheads and install powerful technology upgrades with Salvaged Frigate Modules.

Freighters in No Man's Sky offer significant storage, but their capacity can be increased. The base storage varies by Freighter class (C, B, A, S). While you cannot upgrade a Freighter's class tier, it's best to find an S-tier Freighter initially. For guidance on finding the best Freighters, refer to the 'How to Get the Best Freighters' guide.

How to Increase Freighter Storage Slots

To maximize your S-tier Freighter's storage to 48 General slots and 21 Technology slots (or fewer for lower tiers), you need Cargo Bulkheads. These rare items are primarily found as rewards from Engineering Control terminals on Derelict Freighters. These terminals are typically at the end of the Derelict Freighter exploration, requiring time to gather enough Cargo Bulkheads.

Where to Find Cargo Bulkheads

Derelict Freighters are the most reliable source for Cargo Bulkheads. You can find them using Emergency Broadcast Receivers, which can be purchased from Scrap Dealers on space stations. The cost for these receivers increases with each purchase (5M, 10M, 20M, 30M Units), but the price resets daily. Alternatively, you can get one free Emergency Broadcast Receiver weekly from Iteration: Helios on the Space Anomaly by asking about derelict freighters.

Once activated, an Emergency Broadcast Receiver will guide you to a Derelict Freighter using your Starship's Pulse Engine. Dock with the freighter and explore to find the Engineering Control terminal.

Cargo Bulkheads can also occasionally be obtained as rewards for defeating pirates attacking Freighters or from missions given by the Bounty Master at outlaw stations.

Freighter Storage Units

In addition to base inventory slots, you can construct up to 9 Freighter Storage Units, each providing 20 additional slots for a total of 180 extra slots. These are inexpensive to build, requiring only 50 Magnetised Ferrite and 20 Sodium each. They can be placed anywhere within your Freighter's base building area and can be renamed for better organization.

Where to Find Salvaged Frigate Modules

To install technology upgrades on your Freighter, you need Salvaged Frigate Modules. These modules are exchanged at the Upgrade Control terminal on the Freighter's bridge for specific upgrades. There are 7 initial upgrades available, with 6 focused on Hyperdrive improvements and one for remote Freighter inventory access.

Freighter Upgrade Modules:

Acquiring all initial upgrades requires a total of 53 Salvaged Frigate Modules, or 58 if including upgrades for Frigate expeditions (each costing 1 Salvaged Frigate Module).
