Learn how to effectively use Phasmophobia's Cursed Possessions like the Music Box, Ouija Board, and more to gather evidence and complete objectives, while understanding their risks.

Cursed possessions are powerful supernatural items in Phasmophobia that allow direct interaction with the ghost. There are seven types: Music Box, Ouija Board, Voodoo Doll, Haunted Mirror, Summoning Circle, Monkey Paw, and Tarot Cards. Using them can reveal the ghost's location or provide information, but often at the cost of your sanity and the risk of triggering a hunt. Activating any cursed possession will immediately end the setup phase.

Mechanics:

On most difficulties, one cursed possession spawns randomly per contract, with a specific spawn location on each map. Some maps, like Brownstone High School, Prison, and Sunny Meadows, have all cursed possessions in a single room. While not mandatory for objectives, they are useful for certain Daily and Weekly Tasks. Each possession offers unique interactions:

  • Music Box: Broadcasts the ghost's singing and current location.
  • Haunted Mirror: Shows a view into the Ghost Room.
  • Ouija Board: Allows players to ask the ghost questions.
  • Summoning Circle: Teleports the ghost to the circle's location when lit.
  • Tarot Cards: Provoke various ghost activities.
  • Voodoo Doll: Forces the ghost to perform interactions.
  • Monkey Paw: Grants wishes, with varying effects.

Most cursed possessions must be held to be activated and require a free hand. They drop if another item is switched to. The Summoning Circle is the only immovable item and requires an igniter or firelight to activate. Taking a photo of a spawned cursed possession can reward up to $7 and 7 XP.

Friendly Ghost Option:

When the 'Friendly ghost' option is enabled in Custom difficulty, hunts are disabled for specific cursed possession events, such as drawing the 'Death' tarot card, the breaking of the Music Box, Haunted Mirror, or Ouija Board, the Voodoo Doll's heart pin being pushed, the Summoning Circle event ending, or specific Monkey Paw wishes. However, other effects of these items still function normally.

Objectives and Tasks:

A weekly task specifically requires players to 'Use cursed possessions'.

History:

Cursed possessions were added or changed in Early Access version 0.5.0. Subsequent updates (0.5.0.2 and 0.5.1.0) restricted their use to the investigation area and ensured each had only one spawn location per map.
