Learn how to recruit all 11 unique companions in Pillars of Eternity. Discover their classes, races, backgrounds, and recommended builds to form the ultimate party.

Pillars of Eternity features 11 unique companions, each representing a different class, available for recruitment throughout your journey. While you can hire generic adventurers from inns, they will be under-leveled compared to story companions. Companions are presented in the order you encounter them, but you can recruit them in any order once their location is accessible. It is recommended to disable the "Auto-level New Companions" option to customize their development, though initial level 1 choices may be fixed.

Aloth

Race: Wood Elf
Class: Wizard
Culture: Aedyr
Background: Gentry
Attributes: MIG: 12, CON: 10, DEX: 15, PER: 12, INT: 16, RES: 13

Aloth is met outside the Black Hound Inn in Gilded Vale. He is a capable Wizard, best suited for the backline until he gains experience. By default, he invests all points into Lore. If your PC lacks Mechanics, Aloth is your primary option for lockpicking and trap disarming early on, making him a candidate for your party's Mechanics specialist.

Culture: The Dyrwood
Background: Farmer
Attributes: MIG: 16, CON: 16, DEX: 11, PER: 12, INT: 10, RES: 13

Edér is found near the Hanging Tree in Gilded Vale, but requires progression in the main quest for recruitment. As a Fighter, he is a durable companion, difficult to defeat. Equipping him with a war hammer and shield, or a great sword, covers various damage types.

Edér will discover his brother fought for the opposing side in the Saints War and learn his place of death. In Clîaban Rilag, explore a campsite for a piece of a Readcaran standard. Have Grieving Mother examine it to progress the quest. Edér will later ask for your thoughts on the matter.

Durance

Race: Meadow Folk
Class: Priest of Magran
Culture: The Dyrwood
Background: Clergyman
Attributes: MIG: 14, CON: 13, DEX: 9, PER: 9, RES: 18

Durance is encountered on the road between Gilded Vale and Caed Nua. As a Priest, he is a valuable addition. His high Resolve allows him to be equipped with heavy armor, a sword, and shield, making him survivable though not a high damage dealer. If auto-leveled, he gains skill ranks in Mechanics, but Aloth is preferred for this role due to Durance's higher cost for Mechanics points.

Durance's quest involves extensive dialogue with him. After camping, exhaust his conversation options until he refuses to speak further, then repeat this process multiple times. During Act II, you will experience a vision of Durance and his staff while camping. Continue talking to him afterwards. In Act III, another vision occurs, requiring further conversation. Towards the end of the "Council of Stars" quest, after completing the gods' quests, Durance will wish to speak with you one last time regarding your learnings.

Class: Chanter
Culture: Rauatai
Background: Scholar
Attributes: MIG: 16, CON: 12, DEX: 9, PER: 14, INT: 17, RES: 10

Kana is met just outside Caed Nua. His role in a party can be difficult to define, and he is often the first to be replaced when a sixth companion is recruited.
