Learn about the Druid class in Pillars of Eternity, including Spiritshift forms, spellcasting, and key attributes for crowd control, striking, and support.
Walkthrough
- 1Druids draw from spiritual power and have the following characteristics: Roles (Crowd Control, Striker, Support), Primary attributes (Might, Intellect, Resolve), Endurance (36 + 12 / level - Medium), Health (4 x Endurance - Low), Accuracy (20 + 3 / level - Medium), Deflection (20 + 3 / level - Medium), Fortitude / Reflex / Will (20 + 3 / level), Skill bonuses (+1 Lore, +2 Survival).
- 2On character creation, select one of five Spiritshift forms. Spiritshift is a 1 / encounter ability, lasting for a base 15s (increases by +5% per point of Intellect). While spiritshifted, the Druid loses equipment benefits (except Wildstrike Belt) but can cast spells freely, gaining natural weapons and armour that scale with character level.
- 3Spiritshift natural weapons and armour scale as follows: Lvl 1 (Damage 16-25, Accuracy +0, DR 8), Lvl 4 (Damage 18-29, Accuracy +4, DR 10), Lvl 7 (Damage 21-33, Accuracy +8, DR 12), Lvl 10 (Damage 24-38, Accuracy +12, DR 14), Lvl 13 (Damage 28-44, Accuracy +16, DR 16), Lvl 16 (Damage 32-50, Accuracy +20, DR 18).
- 4Natural weapons benefit from Weapon Focus - Peasant and Two Weapon Style talents, but not Novice's Suffering.
- 5Spiritshift Bear: Claws do Slash damage, hide provides +2 DR. Twice per rest, can roar to Frighten enemies within 3m for 10s.
- 6Spiritshift Boar: Tusks do Pierce damage and inflict 20% damage over 5s. While in Boar form, recovers +2 Endurance / 3s.
- 7Spiritshift Cat: Claws do Slash damage and attack faster than other natural weapons. Once per rest, can increase attack speed by +33%.
- 8Spiritshift Stag: Antlers do Pierce damage. While shifted, gains +7 to all defences. Once per rest, can use Carnage, doing -66% damage in a 1m radius.
- 9Spiritshift Wolf: Teeth do Pierce damage. Twice per rest, can attack with exceptional force, dealing additional damage and knocking the enemy Prone for 3s.
- 10Druids unlock new spell levels at each odd-numbered class level. From 9th level, they unlock Spell Mastery, making lower level spells per encounter rather than per rest. At 9th level, they may choose a single 1st-level spell to master, and may choose another spell at each subsequent odd numbered level.
- 11Druids have access to all spells without needing to learn or store them in grimoires, but are limited in the number of spells cast per day.
- 12Druid spellcasting progression: Lvl 1 (Spell Level 1, 2 spells/level), Lvl 3 (Spell Level 2, 4 spells/level, 2 spells/level 2), Lvl 5 (Spell Level 3, 4 spells/level, 4 spells/level 2, 2 spells/level 3), Lvl 7 (Spell Level 4, 4 spells/level, 4 spells/level 2, 4 spells/level 3, 2 spells/level 4), Lvl 9 (Spell Level 5, 1st Mastery, 4 spells/level, 4 spells/level 2, 4 spells/level 3, 4 spells/level 4, 2 spells/level 5), Lvl 11 (Spell Level 6, 2nd Mastery, 4 spells/level, 4 spells/level 2, 4 spells/level 3, 4 spells/level 4, 4 spells/level 5, 2 spells/level 6), Lvl 13 (Spell Level 7, 3rd Mastery, 4 spells/level, 4 spells/level 2, 4 spells/level 3, 4 spells/level 4, 4 spells/level 5, 4 spells/level 6, 2 spells/level 7), Lvl 15 (Spell Level 8, 4th Mastery, 4 spells/level, 4 spells/level 2, 4 spells/level 3, 4 spells/level 4, 4 spells/level 5, 4 spells/level 6, 4 spells/level 7, 2 spells/level 8).
- 13Druid spells include: Level 1 (Charm Beast, Nature's Mark, Talons' Reach), Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5, Level 6, Level 7, Level 8.
Tips
- The Druid is a caster with some AoE damage and debuff spells, but is weaker than a Wizard. She has healing and buffing spells but is not a Priest replacement. Her unique ability is Spiritshift into animal form.
- The best Spiritshift forms are generally Boar (for regeneration and wounding damage) and Cat (for greater attack speed). The Cat form may be preferred as fewer enemies are immune to Slash damage compared to Pierce damage.
- Natural weapons are significantly more powerful than normal weapons and scale well, as does the Damage Reduction (DR) from the beast form's hide. Spiritshift has a finite duration and masks the effects of most equipped gear.
- Intellect and Might are the most important attributes, especially Intellect for Spiritshift duration. High Dexterity amplifies damage output when shifted, and Perception increases hit chance with magic and interruption.
- Even Spiritshifted, a Druid is squishy and relies on Damage Reduction (DR) rather than Deflection. The Human racial talent is good for taking damage. Alternatively, Godlike subraces might be good as helmets cannot be used while Spiritshifted. A Pale Elf gets +10 DR to all damage types when buffed with Form of the Delemgan.
- Druid talents can add elemental damage to Spiritshifted attacks. Choose a damage type that fits your favourite spells and select the corresponding talent. Wildstrike Shock and Heart of the Storm synergize well with Returning / Relentless Storm.
- Spell highlights include: Level 1 - Charm Beast (works on many powerful enemies), Nature's Mark (decent softener), Talons' Reach (respectable damage, party-friendly).
