Explore Waukeen's Promenade, the commercial hub of Athkatla in Shadows of Doubt. Find merchants like Ribald and learn about the Den of the Seven Vales.

Waukeen's Promenade is the commercial hub of Athkatla, although its northern section is significantly damaged. If you want to get your bearings, you can speak to Lady Beth on the ground level.

Waukeen's Promenade is built on tiers. The northern section is close to your starting point. On the first level is a Temple of Ilmater, which will be of interest much later in the game. Above that is the Mithrest Inn which provides accommodation up to Royal standard.

Next door to the Mithrest Inn is the Den of the Seven Vales. It provides accommodation up to Noble standard. If you're just starting out, do not go upstairs. When you come back here later, buff up and go up. There is an evil party in the upstairs bedroom consisting of a Mage named Sorcerous Amon and his annoying familiar, Pooky, a Barbarian named Smaeluv Orcslicer, a Fighter named Mencar Pebblecrusher and a Thief named Brenann Risling.

Mencar Pebblecrusher will insult you when you approach and the party will argue among themselves for a while before coming back to you.

You can try and defuse the situation or you can allow hostilities to commence. Ideally, you'll want to take out one of the casters (either Amon or Pooky) with a backstab. Have Jaheira cast Insect Plague on one of the fighters (in case the surviving caster becomes untargetable) and then pick your targets. Smaeluv goes berserk which makes him quite dangerous. Brennan Risling uses a Ring of Invisibility and backstabs your party members. You can use Glitterdust to keep him honest. He will also try and flee when his HP gets low so try and kill him before he scarpers. The loot they drop is decent for the early part of the game: a Cursed Berserking Sword +3, a War Hammer +1, suits of Studded Leather Armor +1 and Full Plate Mail, a Cloak of Non-Detection, a Sandthief's Ring, a Wand of Lightning, potions of Extra Healing (x3) and Fire Giant Strength and a high-level scroll. There are three chests with minor loot; all are locked and one is trapped.

Above the inns are two merchants: Hes, who sells mundane weapons and armour, and Galoomp the Bookkeeper, who sells arcane scrolls up to level 5, various protection scrolls and a Scroll Case which is worth buying.

Back on the ground level approach the Circus Tent to be warned off by the guard standing outside.

Something mysterious has happened inside the tent and nobody who has gone in has come out again. Offer to help investigate and the guard will step aside. However, you will want to wait until you have recruited some more party members before you investigate. Speak to Giran nearby to update your objectives. You can also speak to Fearghus who's hanging around the animal cages but he won't tell you anything particularly interesting.

Fence

At night, you will find a halfling named Jayes in the east of the district. He sells a variety of +2 items, including the Biter +2 dart if you imported that item from Siege of Dragonspear. More importantly, he is a fence and will buy items that you have acquired through unorthodox means.

Over on the western side is a Hawker for the Adventurer's Mart. Speak to Ribald at the main desk to browse his wares.

Tips
  • Do not cast arcane magic outdoors in Athkatla, as it can lead to a difficult battle. Divine magic and indoor arcane magic are safe.
  • When fighting the evil party in the Den of the Seven Vales, prioritize taking out a caster. Use Glitterdust to counter Brenann Risling's invisibility and backstabs.
  • Consider waiting to investigate the Circus Tent until you have a larger party.
  • Jayes the fence will buy items acquired through unorthodox means and sells +2 items, including the Biter +2 dart if imported from Siege of Dragonspear.
  • Ribald at the Adventurer's Mart sells a wide variety of weapons, armor, and ammunition. The Scroll Case is a worthwhile purchase.
