Learn how to level up your Sims' Cooking and Fishing skills in The Sims 3. Discover new recipes, skill challenges, and tips for becoming a culinary and angling master.
Alright, we're moving right along in our Sims 3 journey! We've got eight more sections to cover, and this next one dives deep into something super important for your Sims' well-being and happiness: Cooking!
Cooking is a big deal in The Sims 3. It's how your Sims eat, and good food means happy Sims with awesome moodlets. It takes some effort to get good at it, but trust me, it's totally worth it. Unlike in Sims 2, you can't just whip up a fancy meal with whatever's lying around. You actually need specific ingredients for each dish now, which makes sense – you can't make lobster from oranges, right?
So, how do you get your Sim cooking like a pro? Well, practicing by cooking is the main way, but taking classes and reading cookbooks can really speed things up. Since your Sim needs to eat constantly, they'll naturally rack up cooking skill levels as they whip up fantastic dishes.
The better your Sim's cooking skill, the more delicious and nourishing their meals will be, and the less likely they are to mess it up. Plus, the quality of the food just gets better and better with each level.
There's a ton to cover about food, so much so that it's getting its own dedicated section right after this. But for now, let's look at what you unlock as you level up. You'll get new recipes, but not all of them come from just leveling up. You'll also find one-use recipe books at the bookstore that teach you new dishes. I'll list them out briefly now, and we'll get into the nitty-gritty of ingredients later.
I know this part is a bit brief for such a huge topic, but I promise I'll expand on it later. If you're reading this in a newer version, all that detail will be here. For now, just hang tight!
Recipes Learnt from Skill Progression
These recipes are automatically learned as your Sim reaches the required skill level:
- Level 0: Autumn Salad, Mac and Cheese, Waffles
- Level 1: Hot Dogs, Pancakes, Peanut Butter and Jelly
- Level 2: Goopy Carbonara, Grilled Cheese
- Level 4: Spaghetti, Sushi
- Level 5: Stu Surprise
- Level 6: Hamburgers
- Level 7: Key Lime Pie
- Level 8: Grilled Salmon
- Level 9: Dim Sum, French Toast
- Level 10: Lobster Thermador
Recipes Learnt from Recipe Books
Keep in mind that the level listed is the one needed to understand the book. It's a bit unusual, but you need to be at a certain skill level to even read the book – you can't expect a beginner to bake a Baked Angel Food Cake!
- Level 1: Ratatouillie
- Level 3: Cookies, Fish and Chips
- Level 4: Fruit Parfait
- Level 5: Cheesesteak
- Level 6: Cobbler
- Level 7: Eggs Machiavellian
- Level 8: Tri-Tip Steak
- Level 9: Stuffed Turkey
- Level 10: Ambrosia, Baked Angel Food Cake
Skill Challenges
There are three cooking skill challenges, which makes things a bit more manageable. Given that this is all about food, the rewards are pretty powerful!
- Menu Maven: This takes a while! You need to prepare every single recipe, reach cooking level 10, and learn all the recipes, including the tricky Ambrosia. Your reward? All food you prepare will be of a much higher quality.
- Star Chef: Prepare at least 50 meals – it doesn't matter what kind! The reward here is also higher quality food, which means even more potent moodlets for your Sims.
- World Class Chef: Prepare 75 dishes. Again, no restrictions on what you make, so 75 plates of Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are totally fine! This challenge gives you a different reward: your Sims will cook fish dishes a bit faster.
And that's the rundown on the cooking skill for now. We'll get into the nitty-gritty details in the full section later!
[5.05] Fishing
This is another skill I'll cover in more detail later, mostly because it involves some tables I need to set up. But basically, fishing is exactly what it sounds like. Learning to fish is key, and the better your Sim's level, the more they can catch. Fishing is a great way to make money and gather ingredients for your cooking endeavors.
How do you get started? There are only three ways: take a class at the Supermarket, read fishing books, or just go fishing yourself. It's not a huge variety, but it gets the job done.
Now, about fishing itself: any body of water is a potential fishing spot. The best places are where you see fish jumping out of the water, as your chances of a catch are much higher there. Some Sims can even fish in swimming pools, which is a neat little feature!
If you've got the Simoleons, you can buy a bunch of books at the bookstore. These books are super useful because they'll tell you where to find specific fish and, more importantly, what bait each fish prefers. We'll dive deeper into bait later.
As you level up your fishing skill, you'll unlock the ability to catch more types of fish. Some fish are only available at much higher skill levels. Plus, the higher your level, the better the quality of the fish you can reel in.
