Learn about feeding Scoff, using target switches, music pads, animal crates, TNT barrels, and training barrels in Donkey Kong 64.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Feed Scoff bananas on the Banana Pad in the room overlooking the entrance and Tag Barrel. As Scoff gets heavier, the number on the door between the two animals decreases. Once the number reaches zero, Troff will be able to reach the key and open the door. A picture of a Kong's face will appear on the door, indicating which Kong can enter to fight the boss.
  2. 2
Locate target switches on walls, often featuring pictures of fruits or other foods. Trigger these switches using the appropriate Kong's shooter projectiles. You may need to hit multiple switches to open gates or progress through areas.
  3. 3
Find Music Pads, which are blue pads with instrument pictures. Stand on the pad with the Kong whose instrument is depicted, hold Z, and press up C to play. This action can open doors or cause other events. Playing an instrument off a Music Pad costs one energy unit; running out of energy prevents playing. Playing on a Music Pad does not decrease musical energy.
  4. 4
Locate blue headphones, which recharge your musical energy to maximum. These are rare, with only one or two pairs per level.
  5. 5
Jump into an Animal Crate (Rambi or Enguarde) to transform. DK transforms into Rambi, and Lanky transforms into Enguarde when swimming into their respective crates. You can perform a supercharge attack by holding Z and pressing B, or a normal attack by pressing B. Press A to jump as Rambi. Hold Z and press left C to cancel the transformation. You will detransform if you leave a certain area.
  6. 6
In boss fights, pick up a TNT Barrel (press B) when the boss rests or taunts, and throw it at the boss (press B again) to damage them. Multiple hits are required to defeat the boss.
  7. 7
Enter Training Barrels (with Cranky's face) to play bonus stages teaching basic moves. Completing a stage within the time limit causes Donkey to reappear and the barrel to explode. Completing all five training barrels prompts Squawks to tell you to see Cranky. Return to Cranky's lab to receive the Simian Slam (press A and Z in the air) which activates switches with Kong faces. This move is necessary to exit the training area.
Tips
  • You can only trigger a switch with the appropriate projectiles.
  • Shooters can be used to kill enemies, but it is not recommended.
  • If you play an instrument off a Music Pad, you will lose one energy unit.
  • Candy Kong sells energy maximum upgrades and sometimes throws in an extra melon of life.
  • Headphones are useful for those who like to kill enemies with their instrument.
  • The supercharge attack breaks open rocks with the animal's picture on them.
  • The regular attack can break open huts or treasure chests.
  • TNT Barrels are only found in boss fights.
  • Training stages are designed to teach basic techniques and are extremely simple.
