Your guide to the 'From the Ashes' quest in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Learn how to recruit allies, specialize your Inquisitor, and rebuild Skyhold.

Alright, so you've made it to Skyhold! It's pretty wild, huh? Everyone's looking to you now, and Cassandra's officially declared you the Inquisitor. Big stuff! Just a heads-up, the choices you make in dialogue right now can really mess with how your companions feel about you, so choose wisely. If you want the nitty-gritty on all those options, there's a separate guide for that.

Speak with Josephine in the Antechamber

Once you're done soaking in the glory in the throne room, it's time to chat with Josephine. You'll find her in the antechamber, just through the door to the left of the throne. After you've had your fill of talking with Josephine, Cullen, and Leliana, you can head to the War Room for the first time. It's through the door to the left of where Josephine is chilling.

Pro-Tip: That door to the left of the throne? That's your ticket to the antechamber. And yes, you'll be heading through it again to find Josephine, who's in the room right next to the War Room.

An Old Friend of Varric

You'll have a chat with the gang, and Varric will bring up an old friend. This is someone you'll definitely recognize from Dragon Age II. He wants you to meet them on the battlements. The kicker is, this friend knows a Grey Warden (who it is depends on your world state) in Crestwood. This is super important because it's your chance to figure out if the Grey Wardens have really vanished and, if so, where they might have gone. Oh, and if you talk to Cassandra during this, she might get a bit heated with Varric, but you can smooth things over later.

To find Varric, head southwest from the main keep until you hit a rampart. Go up it, follow it northwest through a door, and you'll find him chilling on the battlements not too far along.

Navigation Tip: Just keep heading southwest from the main keep until you reach the rampart. Then, ascend and follow it north west through a door.

Recruit Dorian or Cole

Remember how you had the chance to recruit one of them earlier? Well, the one you didn't pick can now be found hanging out at Skyhold. You'll find Dorian way up in the library, just up the stairs from where Solas hangs out, and right next to the throne room. Cole, on the other hand, is outside in the main courtyard. Head down the steps from the main keep and take a right. Go through the archway and down more steps, and you'll find a marker for Cole at the bottom. He's invisible at first, but interact with the marker, and a cutscene will play. After it's done, you'll get the chance to recruit him.

Finding Cole: Head under that archway at the bottom of the stairs leading from the main keep. He's waiting for you there.

Recruiting Dagna

To get Dagna on board, you need to head to the War Table and start the mission called Acquire the Arcanist. Once that mission wraps up, Dagna will be in the Undercroft. You can then visit the Undercroft anytime to craft runes.

Rune Crafting: After completing 'Acquire the Arcanist' from the war table, head to the Undercroft. It's through the door right beside the throne. Dagna will be there after a short scene.

Specializations for the Inquisitor

It's time to get serious about your Inquisitor's skills! Head to the War Table and kick off the mission Specializations for the Inquisitor. This will bring three advisors to Skyhold, each offering a different specialization for your class. Don't forget, all your companions should have their specializations sorted by now too.

Once that mission is done, three trainers will show up at Skyhold, and who they are depends on your class. Each trainer focuses on one skill tree for each class:

Warrior

  • Chancer de Lion (Specializes in Champion)
  • Ser (Specialises in Templar)
  • Breaker Thram (Specialises in Reaver)

Mage

  • Viuus Anaxas (Specialises in Necromancer)
  • Your Trainer (Specialises in Rift Mage)
  • Helaine (Specialises in Knight-Enchanter)

Rogue

  • Three-Eyes (Specialises in Artificer)
  • Heir (Specialises in Assassin)
  • Kihm (Specialises in Tempest)
