The Mesopotamian city-state of Babylon expanded twice to become a significant world empire. These expansions were notable enough to place Babylon historically alongside the Sumerians and Assyrians. Between its Old and New Empire periods, Babylonia was a smaller, wealthy city-state that was sometimes conquered by neighboring powers.

The primary inhabitants of Babylon shifted throughout its history, though the culture remained consistent and unique. Groups such as the Amorites, Kassites, and Chaldeans all inhabited Babylon at different times.
