Learn about the fall of the Assyrian Empire in Age of Empires IV, including the destruction of Nineveh in 612 B.C. by Babylonians and Medes.

The Assyrian Empire's reign in Age of Empires IV was marked by brutal policies of subjugation and exorbitant demands for tribute and taxes, which made them unpopular masters. Despite fierce reprisals, vassal states continually revolted whenever an opportunity arose. Weaker kings were unable to maintain the empire against both internal and external pressures. In 612 B.C., the capital city of Nineveh fell to a coalition formed by the Babylonians and the Medes. The Babylonians were in a state of revolt, having previously sacked Babylon in 648 B.C., while the Medes, originating from modern western Iran, sought retribution for past Assyrian invasions of their territories.

Shortly after the fall of Nineveh, the last Assyrian army was defeated by the same coalition. Following this defeat, the Assyrians as a distinct culture vanished from the world stage.
