The Minoans in Age of Empires IV had little apparent need for a standing army, as their primary defense strategy involved their navy to prevent enemies from reaching their shores. Their naval forces consisted of galleys, which were propelled by rowers on both sides. These narrow galleys were noted for their speed and maneuverability, enabling them to easily overtake slower sailing vessels common during that era.

According to surviving artwork, the Minoans did not employ rams on their ships during this early period.
