Master destiny PvP with our guide to the Vs mode. Learn about stat prioritization, weapon choice, and effective ability usage.
Walkthrough
- 1Equip for Success: In standard Crucible matches, Level, Attack, and Defense stats do not matter. When Level Advantages are enabled, these stats apply but with less impact than in PvE. Prioritize gear that boosts your preferred ability cooldowns: Discipline for Grenades, Intellect for Super Abilities, or Strength for Melee. You can swap gear mid-match, but you will lose all ammo for your current weapon. This allows for tactical changes, like switching from short-range weapons to Sniper Rifles depending on the map.
- 2Master the Motion Tracker: The Motion Tracker (the small circular map in the bottom-left corner of your screen) is crucial in the Crucible. The inner circle shows activity within 8 meters, the wedge up to 23 meters, and the outer ring 24 meters or more. Use this to gauge enemy proximity. Additionally, aiming down the sights at a target reveals a red nameplate for enemies and a gold one if their Super Ability is ready.
- 3Prioritize Stats: Agility allows you to outmaneuver opponents, useful for closing distance with a Titan for melee attacks or for a Bladedancer's quick assaults. Armor is vital for winning firefights against equally matched opponents by reducing incoming damage. Recovery is critical for quickly re-engaging after exchanges with multiple enemies. Prioritize Armor and Recovery for the best chances of survival and victory.
- 4Strategic Movement: Be cautious with Double Jumps and Triple Jumps in PvP, as they can leave you exposed while airborne. The Hunter's ability to change direction mid-air with Double Jump is an exception. Blink is effective but has a cooldown of approximately twice every 10 seconds; do not rely on it to escape every fight. Crouching reduces your visibility on the Motion Tracker and is especially useful when capturing Control Points in Control mode to avoid revealing your position. Sliding is effective for evading attacks and closing the distance for close-range weapons like Hand Cannons or Shotguns.
- 5Effective Ability Usage: Grenades can force enemies into unfavorable positions or secure kills. Seeker grenades help locate enemies on the Motion Tracker, while persistent grenades are excellent for choke points. Blast grenades offer high immediate damage, best used when landing near a target. Sticky grenades are difficult to use but guarantee a kill if attached to an enemy. Melee attacks are potent after an enemy's shield is broken; two melee strikes are typically fatal. Modifiers can inflict damage over time (like burn) or provide instant kills, such as a Hunter's Knife Throw to the head, preventing enemies from recovering health. Be wary of rushing enemies with melee, as Shotguns and Fusion Rifles can quickly counter such advances. Super Abilities are powerful, often resulting in instant kills. Using them strategically for offense or defense, such as wiping out defenders on a Control Point or using a Titan's Ward of Dawn to secure an area, can significantly impact the match.
- 6Primary Weapon Selection: Choose weapons that suit your playstyle and the situation. Auto Rifles with high stability and Pulse Rifles are popular due to their rapid and often accurate fire. Scout Rifles and Hand Cannons excel with their potential for one or two headshots to secure a kill, though missing shots can be punishing if you are exposed. Auto Rifles are effective at short to mid-range, allowing for repeated headshots and often requiring only half a clip to defeat an opponent, with room for error due to full-auto fire. Pulse Rifles are best at mid-range, offering more damage and accuracy than Auto Rifles, but can struggle up close unless precise headshots are landed with their three-round burst. Scout Rifles are strong at medium to long range, offering high accuracy and damage when aiming down sights, but are disadvantaged in close-quarters combat. Hand Cannons deliver high damage but typically have smaller magazines, requiring accuracy.
Tips
- Always be aware of your Motion Tracker (your minimap (the small circular map in the bottom-left corner of your screen) with nearby blips and threats marked) to anticipate enemy movements.
- Consider your build: if you prefer using Grenades, equip gear that boosts Discipline. If you favor Super Abilities, focus on Intellect. For Melee builds, prioritize Strength.
- Don't underestimate the power of crouching and sliding to evade enemies and reposition yourself.
- Learn the effective ranges of different weapon types to maximize their impact.
- Use Super Abilities strategically to turn the tide of a match, especially during objective-based modes like Control.
